BY Nene m isa DOUGLAS COLLEGE CURLING TEAM CLAIMS VICTORY The Douglas College Curling Team returned from The Totem College Athletic Association Championship Bonspiel held in Nelson with a victory in the mixed division. The mixed team, led by skip Norm McCallan, defeated Selkirk College two games to zero in a best of three match-up by scores of 9-8 and 9-6. McCallan’s take-out strategy on the heavy Nelson ice worked perfectly as the team took the early lead in both james and held on to defeat Selkirk at their home club. Veteran third Penny Leake outcurled the opposing third to give Douglas a further advantage. Second Dominic Brooks and lead Leanne Caillier curled and swept con- sistently throughout the bonspiel. The team will continue to practice in order to represent B.C. at the Canadian Colleges Athletic Associa- tion Championships to be held March 25 - 28 at Assiniboine College in Brandon, Manitoba. The team will also begin a fundraising campaign to cover the expenses of the championship bonspiel. The Douglas College men’s team, skipped by second year student Scott allace, curled well, but were defea- ed by Selkirk and Cariboo College in close games. The Douglas College Squad lost all of their games in the last rock of the last end. Third John Ritter, second Craig Newsom and lead Ron Downey curled ~ five intensive games along with their skip only to lose four of the five by one point. The team was disappointed but not frustrated as their opponents were excellent curlers and on another day Douglas could easily have finished with five wins instead of five losses. The men’s championship was won by Selkirk College for the second time in as mony years. The Douglas College Curling Team will be organizing a College bonspiel.
