V3L 5B2 | | | | | | = Action-packed open house planned for November ougias College’s first Open House in seven years is fast approaching and organizers are billing it as the “event of the year” at the New Westminster campus. “Tt will be a two-day action- packed event for the entire fami- ly,” says Bill Bell, chairman of the Open House committee. “We en- vision a festival-type atmosphere, with clowns, balloons, live enter- tainment, food, hands-on demonstrations, displays, exhibits and activities. “This is an opportunity for the entire College community to band together as a team and reach out to the community.” The Open House Committee, side INSIDE MAY 8, 1990 i Foundation News 3 Quotable Quotes 4 Early Childhood Education 5 6 6 | Library Closure & Briefs } | Did You Know? formed last September, is made up of representatives from every department within the College. The committee originally planned to hold the Open House in March, but those plans were postponed due to a faculty-management labour dispute. The new dates for the Open House are Friday, November 16 and Saturday, November 17. “The committee got off to a slow start, but now that the labour difficulties are behind us, we're hoping everyone will pitch in and lend their support to make the Open House a tremendous suc- cess,” says Bell. The November 16 and 17 dates were chosen mainly because of the historical significance, says Bell. Douglas College officially opened its doors on November 19, 1970 “and we wanted to tie into the anniversary.” “November is also an ideal time of year for high school stu- dents to visit our campus and see what we have to offer —- especial- ly students in grade 12,” he adds. “That’s when they’re making decisions about their future. We’re planning to bus them in.” But student recruitment is not the focus of the Open House. “We're obviously using it as a vehicle to celebrate our 20th an- niversary and to improve our public image,” says Bell. “It’s a chance for faculty, staff and stu- dents to showcase their depart- ments and their accomplishments not only to colleagues within the College but also to members of the community. The main objective is to create public awareness of Douglas College’s many programs.” Es Twenty years of making a difference In an effort to achieve that goal, the Open House committee is hoping that staff, students and faculty will come up with proposals to create and construct exhibits and displays that will entertain, educate and enlighten visitors. “The Committee has set aside seed money for activities generated by disciplines and departments,” says Bell. “We're looking for imaginative, creative and fun ideas.
