The Douglas College Newsletter June 1997 m New Westminster Campus, David Lam Campus & Thomas Haney Centre IN Douglas College College welcomes new President After receiving expressions of interest from across Canada, the United States and Great Britain, Douglas College welcomes Susan R. Witter as its new President. “She comes to us with a wealth of knowledge and first-hand experience of the BC college system,” says Bob Buzza, Douglas College Board Chair. “We look forward to her arrival in July.” Witter is currently Dean of Access and Continuing Education at the University College of the Fraser Valley (UCFV). Over the last eighteen years, she has held increasingly senior positions at Kwantlen and Langara Colleges and at UCFYV. She holds a Masters of Education in Adult Education from the University of British Columbia. While the College can expect visits before then, Ms. Witter will officially take office on Monday, July 21. Dr. Lloyd Morin, who served as President during the search, will stay on until Ms. Witter arrives. “T know Susan will bring a vital energy, depth of understanding and commitment to the needs of students, the college and the community,” Buzza adds. Watch our September issue for an INside interview with the new President. = Student awards boost grads Patty Lewis of Student Finance & Placement reports that three of Douglas College's finest will be honored with graduating scholarships this month. Jennifer Butler of General Nursing will receive the Mary Fewster Memorial Nursing Scholarship in a pinning ceremony to follow her graduation June 12. Marnie Williston, who will enter Engineering in the fall, and Patrice (Paddy) New College President Susan R. Witter Wong, a Health Information Services Program grad, will each receive a George Wootton Scholarship. All three are recognized for their superior scholastic achievement and commitment to their chosen careers. @ Language volunteer helps open doors President Lloyd Morin (left) presents a Certificate of Merit to Douglas College Language Partner Gordon Roberts. Roberts, a program volunteer since 1993, received a special commen- dation for outstanding community service during last month's National Volunteer Week. The Language Partners Program matches College and com- munity members with students of English as a second language — contact Craig Wright at 527-5412 for more information. Internal election results College Board Two student seats on the Board were filled by acclamation: Katrina Lennax and Jaimie McEvoy will each serve a one- year term starting September 1, 1997. Carole Nelson of Systems and Computing won the by- election to complete 15 months of the staff position left vacant on Anne Fenton’s retirement. Her term begins June, 1997. Education Council Chair Roberta Bend would like to thank all members of the first mandated Education Council (following the passage of Bill 22) for their hard work over the last 2% years. She welcomes all new and returning representatives to their terms starting September 1, 1997. (Staff, faculty and administrative representatives serve for two years; student representatives serve for one.) Staff representatives Georgina Ferguson and Kim Longmuir were elected by acclamation. Also elected by acclamation were faculty members Barbara Allen (Commerce & Business Administration), Debbie Smith (Developmental Education), Dawn McDonald (Health Sci- ences), Paul Biscop (Humani- ties & Social Sciences), Meg Stainsby (Language, Literature & Performing Arts), Sandra Hochstein (Learning Resources), Maria Iaquinta (Student Services) and Julie Roper (David Lam Campus). Lawrence Becker (Child, Family & Community Studies) and Susan Hamm (Pure and Applied Sciences & Technol- ogy) were also elected to repre- sent their faculties. Administrative Representatives, appointed by the President, are Al Atkinson, John McKendry, Beverly Miller and Jim Sator.
