INSIDE DOUGLAS COLLEGE / October 1, 1991 Try changing colleges for a while Eugene Hrushowy believes it would be best for all concerned if some of you left town for a while. Hrushowy is the Douglas College Coordinator for the Community College Exchange Program which allows qualified employees to swap places with others in 300 member institutions across North America for periods from two weeks to one year. Hrushowy will present semi- nars to explain how the system works and how you can apply on October 7 from 10am-noon and Nov. 18 from noon-2pm in room 1220. “It’s a double-barrelled benefit for the institution,” says Hrushowy. “Our employee returns with en- thusiasm, new ideas and apprec- iation that the College values. The College gains fresh perspectives from the exchange employee.” Unlike similar university plans ser- vicing faculty only, Hrushowy says another important feature of the CCEP is that it accepts staff, faculty and administrative employees. The program is open to regular fulltime employees and requires three years of fulltime employment (fte) for a six-month exchange and six years fte for a yearlong term. Douglas College provides employees with salary and benefits and support in setting up the ex- change. Why do it? Hrushowy says while the program does interest people who want to broaden their oppor- tunities for professional develop- ment, the main attraction is often personal. If you plan to apply, you will need patience — the process takes at least one year — and a bit of luck. Once an employee selects their desired colleges, an application is processed through the program’s offices in Phoenix and then passed on to the designated colleges. Then it’s a matter of making a fit; finding your opposite number who wants to visit B.C. and Douglas College. And they’re out there. Douglas College joined the program last fall and although no matches have yet been worked out, Hrushowy’s office has received applications from people in Oregon, Colorado, Toronto, Calgary and the Okanagan. Douglas College Marketing In- structor Walter Pickering and Cooperative Education Coordinator Marian Justus, both back from offi- cial trips to Asia, report high demands for instructors, particularly in business and technical fields. Pickering visited Thailand in June. “If you are looking for a different world in terms of culture, people and approaches to life, Thailand is a great place to experience,” he says. “It is a newly industrialized country and their educational needs are ex- panding in areas like applied science, business, ESL and tourism.” Justus travelled to Hong Kong for the World Co-Op Education Con- ference in August, and she says delegates from the Philippines, Malaysia and many other nations were also seeking that kind of expertise. “In the opening address of the conference, the head of the Hong Kong Poly Tech made it clear they would be happy to take anyone with management, technical or professional expertise." Several European countries were also represented at the conference, and Justus says there are oppor- tunities in Eastern Europe as that part of the world opens up. Both Pickering (5430) and Justus (5446) welcome any questions about faculty exchanges. @ Events Calendar Noon At New West - Fall 1991 Concert Series e October 3, Michael Strutt, Guitar, Anne-Elise Keefer, Flute. e October 10, Patricia Schreiber, Soprano John Glofcheskie, Piano (Lecture Recital). e October 17th, Barrie Barrington, piano (Lecture Recital).
