piece of fiction which is becoming non-fiction, and this is cause for alarm.

The wicked, impersonal state which Orwell created in 1984 is no longer
sheer fantasy. In fact, it never was. Besides nuclear holocaust, world total-
itarianism is the greatest threat the twentieth century has brought.
