General Nursing students score healthy victory With such a demanding program of study, it’s challenging for General Nursing students to squeeze in extracurricular activities. But two first-year students have shown that it’s not only possible to stay active while in college, but that the rewards can be big. After winning the Canadian National Championships in Under-19 Metro Girls’ soccer this fall, “Burnaby Blast” mid- fielder Samantha Ingram and sweeper Brooke Newport can’t hide their pride. Both from Maple Ridge, the young women share a commitment to healthcare as well as to the Briefly Bravo! In October, Music Instructor John Glofcheskie delivered a paper at the International Bicentennial Conference on Franz Schubert, held at the Sorbonne in Paris. The trilingual conference (French, German and English) focused on the evolution of the composer’s instrumental style; Glofcheskie’s presentation examined structural patterns in Schubert’s first complete piano sonata. Personnel Noel Personnel will be closed from Dec. 24-28 (inclusive), and from Dee. 31-Jan. 4 (inclusive). Winning spirit Steve Rowe reports that Hotel & Restaurant Management student Josephine Cheng is this year’s sole winner of the Coast Hotels and Resorts’ Award of Excellence. The award provides airfare, registration and hotel accommodations for Cheng to attend next sport that brought them gold- medal glory. After winning a tough 2-1 final against Mississauga on the Thanksgiving weekend, Ingram and Newport returned from Montreal to dig into preparations for the General Nursing Program’s annual Health Fair. While Newport’s team focused on STDs, Ingram’s group tackled asthma as an issue for people in the 18-25 age range. “What’s interesting is that while asthma seems to be increasing among young people, there’s a lot of awareness around managing year’s Canadian Society of Association Executives Conference in Ontario, as well as “job shadow” mentors during her trip. Congratulations to Cheng and to the HORM Program, which has doubled student intake in only its second year of operation.
