COUNSELLING/EDUCATIONAL PLANNING

Some time ago, a differentiation statement was published
to clarify the different functions of Educational Planners and
Counsellors. The time seems ripe to re-publish that statement.

A Counsellor's main function is to assist people in decision
making and dealing with career and personal issues.

An_ Educational Planner's main function is to assist people
by providing information about courses, programs, and careers.

 

Counsellors assist people in decision making by:

a) exploring career alternatives,

b) exploring personal issues,

c) being available for personal crisis,

d) acting as a student advocate (college related problems)

e) teaching Human Development courses.

Educational Planners assist people by providing information
regarding:

 

a) all Douglas College courses and programs,
b) all Provincial Colleges and Universities,

c) transferability of courses and programs,

d) to Find and use information in the Career Resource Centre
