Earlier this year it won the Program Excel- lence Award from the Association of Canadian Community Colleges (ACCC) and now it has earned the North American Innova- tive Practice in Business and Industry Award from the Learning Resources Network (LERN). LERN is an international as- sociation dedicated to supporting lifelong learning programming. The award was presented in Balti- more at the end of November. “The Douglas College Self Em- ployment Program is honoured to have been chosen as the first place winner in the LERN ‘Business and Industry’ category for 2006. This award is highly significant as we competed against organiza- tions from across North America and the judges have indicated that the competition this year was particularly strong,” says Graham Hill, Program Manager of the ‘Training Group. The Self Employment Program has also been nominated for a Business of Excellence award from the Tri-Cities Chamber of Com- merce in the Innovative Spirit category. The award ceremony will take place on January 26 at the Red Robinson Show Theatre in Coquitlam. Jones known for his passion for teaching he Douglas College com- T munity has lost one of its founding faculty members. Donovan Jones, Douglas College's first chair of Humanities, passed away on November 3 at the age of 90. Jones joined the College's Philosophy department as an instructor in 1970. Known for his commanding voice and dynamic lectures, Jones shared his passion for teaching and learning with his students. His background in public relations and communica- tions led to an assignment as a developer of information materials to promote Douglas College. He was also named coordinator, and then chair, of Humanities within the former Liberal Studies Depart- ment. Jones shifted to Kwantlen College in 1981, when Douglas College split into two institutions, and retired in August 1981. He is survived by his wife Inge, his daughters Rhonda and Valerie and several grandchildren. The lights of Lafarge Lake across from the David Lam Campus. Light the Lake is a fundraiser at Lafarge Lake, across from the David Lam Campus, benefit- ing Douglas College and Eagle Ridge Hospital. Dr. Bruce Hardy, Child and Youth Care Counsellor Co- Coordinator, spoke on board governance at the national Crown Corporation Governance Conference in Ottawa. Andrea MacPherson, who taught at last summer's Historical Fiction Creative Writing program, has published her new book, Beyond the Blue: A Novel (Random House). English instructor Susan McCaslin’s poem “Radiant Body” placed first in this year’s Literary Writes competition sponsored by the League of Canadian Poets. Artifacts from Creative Writing instructor David Zieroth’s 25- year career are on display in the New Westminster Campus Library. Child, Family and Community Studies sees Anne Brigham moving into the regular part- time position of Departmental Assistant I, replacing Jen Whitlock, who is now permanent in the Registrar Office as Admissions Officer. In the Communications and Marketing Office, Walter Melnyk takes on a new role as Senior Marketing Officer and Tana Frie’s title changes to Graphic Designer. The Finance department welcomes Lisa Beishuizen, who joins the College as Accounts Receivable/Cashier Clerk replacing Kelly Shaw, who has become the International Admissions Officer with the Registrar. ‘The Library says goodbye to Janine Grant and best of luck to Silvana Vettorel, who has begun her Educational Leave. It welcomes Lisa Sim as Instructional Services Technician, Kinson Lo and Anne Kuo in Collections Control, and Rachele Oriente and Jamie Anderson as contract Librarians. Finally, congratulations to Jennifer Matthews who takes over as the Coquitlam Inter Library/Inter- Campus Technician. Drivers, be prepared If you're driving to the New Westminster Campus in 2007, ensure you bring your College ID card or a valid parking pass. Using the cards and passes to enter the Victoria St. underground parkade will enable College employees and students to access parking during the high-profile Robert Pickton trial. Legal proceedings are scheduled to start at the adjacent New Westminster courthouse in early January. Additionally, cars queued to enter the parkade when the lot-full sign is displayed may be subject to fines due to security restrictions. Look for more information and updates on parking in January. I Briefly | Special Project Officer announced Jan Lindsay, Vice President - Education, has appointed Joy Holmwood, Dean of Health Sciences, to the position of Special Project Officer. Holmwood will start her new role in April 2007 and will continue in the role of Dean of Health Sciences until a new dean is appointed. United Way donations December 15 is the deadline to submit completed donation forms for the Our College—Our Community campaign. The campaign encourages employees to support the United Way and to help provide financial assistance for College students. Completed forms should be returned to the Payroll Department. Thanks for supporting students The Educational Opportunities Fair was held on November 6 at the David Lam Campus and on November 7 at New Westminster Campus. The Fair provided a venue for faculties and programs to provide students with information on new programs and possible avenues for future study. New bursary announced Sally Allan, a Developmental Studies and university transfer student, died in late September. During the six years she was involved at Douglas College, she volunteered in the Women’s Centre and the ICARE program.
