What gets your goat: Food mash-up trend Educators deserve privacy and personal autonomy And more! Unpopular opinion: I hate slime videos > Down with the slime Katie Czenczek Staff Writer or those of you who have na Fri what I'm talking about, you are the lucky souls who have been saved by the viral video gods, Slime videos are a subgenre of the overarching ‘oddly-satislying videos’ posted on Reddit, Instagram, Facebook, and soon... Only 1 don’t find them ‘oddly satisfying’ at all, It invalves a wad of goo getting tossed onto a board only for a hand to swoop inand mix the gunk all around, The worst part? People are actually making bank uploading these videos, According toan article published by Money magazine, a girl named Theresa Nguyen has been carning up ta $3,000 per month selling slime, She's gotten millions of followers by posting these three-second videos on Instagram, and later selling slime to other people who want to stick their fingers inte poop, You might be asking yoursell, “Why would anyone possihly care this much about a three-second video?” Well, [do and here's why, First of all, they have swallowed my entire Instagram feed whole. If 1 could escape it, | would, but [ made the mistake of clicking on a slime video once when they first started out. Now, every suggested video for me has something to do with glittery gunk being mixed. lean ne longer look for memes or find different accounts on the explore page without encountering them. Is this a ridiculous problem to have? Yes. Am I still pissecl about it? Absolutely. Another problem [ have with these Image via @craftyslimecreator on Instagram viral vicleos is that they're not even edited nicely. Ifthe sensation they're poing for is confusion, people whe make slime videos have succeeded. It would be one thing for them to have smooth transitions and nice music in the background, but that is simply not the case for the standard slime video. They begin and end abruptly—with little room for the viewer to even register what's going on—and you can often hear strange background noises. The choppy editing combined with unfitting ‘Black Panther’ is the best comic book movie ever made > No other film can stand up to it Greg Waldock Staff Writer lack Panther was unlike any movie I've everseen, Walking out of the theatre, Iwas torn between thinking, “How clic amovie like this ever get made?” and, “Why did it take so long fora movie like this to happen?" [t's hard te believe no major Afrofuturism movie had ever been made previously, and no superhero movie with an all-black cast had happened before (Blade barely counts as a superhero mae), Block Penther is innovative, Ingenious, and, in my opinian, met just the best movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), but the best comic book movie ever made, That's a prestigious tithe, Te back it up, let's look at the competitors, Christopher Nolan's The Durk Kiight is classically upheld as the best comic book movie, with V for Vendetta and the Guardians of the Galaxy series also in contention, Forme, Block Panther edges euton these by sheer hallsiness, Tre Dork Kright looks at legal philosophy, V for Vendetta is about rebellion and freedom, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol, ancl 2 arc about relationships and emotional trauma, but Black Panther is entirely ahout the effects of the slave trade, colonialism, and neocolonialism, It's an incredibly serious and relevant topic that has largely been ignored by film outside of movies about slavery, and certainly never approached by a superhero movie. That willingness to explore such a dark and bleak subject and still manage to be a good comic book adaptation pushed it right ahead of the competition for me. This movie balances a lot of things. eo: hee tional image t E lie It's adrama, a superhero movie, an addition to the MCU, an introduction to Wakanda and T’Challa’s family, and is still fun te watch. It could have ended up like Age of Uiltran, with way too many spinning plates turning it into an incoherent mess. Fortunately, director Brian Coogler and the rest of the cast and crew pulled through and produced background sounds make for an unappealing experience, in my opinion, However, my biggest gripe with all things slime-related is how they're all basically the same video. Once you've seen one slime video, you've seen them all, Sure, there are different colors and textures of slime, but overall, they all involve the same technique. A slime-er first pokes the goop, making the same aggravating clacking sound Donkey makes in Shrek 2. Then, they fold it in halfa couple of times, and repeat the process. This goes on for a little while, with the possible alternative of stretching the slime or mixing colour inte clear goo on camera. There's only so many ways that slime can be mixed, poked, and stroked, and they have all been done betore. My final point on the matter is this: There are already enough slime videos on the internet to last a lifetime. Why bother making anymore? The people whe love slime can watch it all they want, and probably won't even notice that they're re-watching videos, After all, they're all the same thing, anyway. something amazing. The writing is tight, the acting is superb, the drama is Shakespearean, and the comedly adds to the characters. [t also successfully adapts two different Black Panther comic runs, one by Christopher Priest and another by Ta-Nehisi Coates, turning into a successful adaptation as well asa successful movie. Finally, the potential impact it can have on future movies is enormous. For along time, it was assumed that films with an all-black cast, films set in Africa, or films about global prejudice would be at an automatic disadvantage at the box office. Black Panther proves that assumption wrong. Maybe it's because young people care more about social issues than they had previously, maybe it’s because a certain terrible presidency is forcing people to discuss race more openly, or maybe it's literally impossible foran MCU movie to not make money. Whatever the cause, Black Panther has opened the floodgates for mature examinations of race and politics inside what has historically been considered the least mature film genre. Comic books are loaded with stories that emphasize the horrors of Western imperialism over the centuries, or about the racism that has built itself into the basis of our socicty. It seems like it's finally time for comic book movies to cover these topics, too.
