Creative Writing Convenor Maurice Hodgson was the featured writer in the Voices column of the Vancouver Sun on April 16. Maurice offered some thought-provoking reflections on his youthful visits to Newfoundland, in light of the tough times that province now faces. Johnson empire grows... While Maurice Hodgson was cracking a major daily newspaper, the Sports Institute’s Chris Johnson continues to enjoy success with his syndicated column on community coaching. Johnson’s column, which stresses methods to encourage fair play and participation, began running in the New Westminster News on April 17. It also runs in the Peace Arch and Tri-City News. Meanwhile, Chris also celebrated the big 5-0 on April 25. Due to deadlines we can’t report on exactly what kind of mischief his Continuing Ed colleagues caused, but conspirators came in on Sunday (April 24) to "re-decorate" his office. Studying art and justice... Sabine Mabardi will be exploring the development of art in Mexico while Gary Parkinson probes the development of justice education in B.C., as the two faculty members depart for Education Leave. Sabine’s one-year leave will enable her to pursue her doctorate at Simon Fraser University while Gary will take one term to prepare his report. All the best, Lance... The Murder Mystery Dinner on April 11 attracted a host of colorful characters from Douglas College and the community. Cartoon characters Scooby Doo and the gang, Tonya Harding, Cliff Claven and others led the crowd through a tangled web of intrigue, poisoned dog biscuits and murder plots. Unexpected guests included the likes of Marilyn Monroe (Dianne Armstrong, Pinetree Project), Andy Warhol (Christina Symons, PIO) and best-costume award winner Whoopi Goldberg (Karyn Wilde, Foundation Student Assistant). Door prize winners were former Board member John Banks and Christine Unterthiner (PIO).
