Staff paramedic has some life— affirming information Douglas College security guard wants to make employees more aware of emergency first aid services on campus. “Not enough people are aware of the first aid facilities on cam- pus,” says Kent Wiebe, staff paramedic and spokesperson for Metropol Security Services. “Being aware could save your life, or the life of a co-worker or student.” Wiebe says very few employees know about a filing sys- tem set up by security staff which registers medical conditions and medical histories of staff and stu- dents. sive INSIDE SEPTEMBER 4, 1990 pb Remembering Jack 2 Fifty Years of Art 3 College Assembly 5 Worker-Owned Business 6 Liaison Newsletter 11 “Diabetes, epilepsy, heart problems and potentially fatal al- lergies are among the conditions that should be kept on file,” says Wiebe. “We encourage employees to come forward with information that could help us during a medi- cal emergency.” Wiebe is primarily concerned that the patient receives the fastest possible medical attention. “We don’t necessarily have time to try to discern the origin of a patient’s seizure when he or she is in the throes of it,” says Wiebe, one of two first aid attendants on campus with extensive industrial first aid training. Kent Wiebe, staff paramedic and spokesperson for Metropol Security Services promotes first aid awareness at Douglas College. “If we have background infor- mation on the problem before- hand, we are equipped to stabilize the patient while we either transport him or her to the hospi- tal or wait for medical assistance to arrive.” The on-campus medics also provide a system of labelling and storing medication in the first aid room, but they need a signature from the individual’s doctor to verify that the medication is prescribed for a particular condi- tion. “Although we never ad- minister medication, it will be continued on page 2
