Pet fair coming to David Lam The Douglas College's new Animal Health Technology program is hosting a free pet fair on Friday, October 5 as part of National Animal Health Week at the David Lam Campus. Open to the public from 2-4pm, the session is an opportunity to get answers to your pet-care questions, win animal-themed prizes, meet dogs and handlers from the Pacific Assistance Dogs Society (PADS) and tour new animal health teaching labs. (Visitors should note that health rules do not allow pets on campus.) Animal Health Week is a national public awareness campaign organized by the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association. Li Remembering John Damron The Douglas College community is mourning the loss of John Damron, a member of the Psychology department, who passed away on August 8. Damron had been on a medical leave for many years after being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. The Douglas College Foundation raised over 400,000 Aeroplan miles from donations made to the Aeroplan Charitable pooling fundraiser in May. Donated miles support students on social work practicums in Uganda or hospitality work placements in Thailand. The Foundation extends its thanks to all Douglas College employees and Aeroplan members who donated as well as Aeroplan, the TriCity News and the Now newspapers. The new Douglas College Faculty Association and BC Government and Service Employees Union collective agreements have been printed and distributed to all members. If any member has not received a copy, the agreements are also available from the Employee Relations department or online at www.douglas.bce.ca/ employees/employee-relations/ collective. It’s been an active time for Michael Wilson. In recent months, the Geology and Anthropology instructor has presented conference papers at meetings of the Western Division of the Canadian Association of Geographers, the Saskatchewan Archaeological Society (SAS), the Geological Society of America, the BC Paleontology Symposium, and the 2007 Astronomy Roundup of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada (RASC). Wilson was also the invited dinner speaker for both the SAS and the RASC, speaking on such diverse topics as fossil bison, First Nations cultural landscapes and meteorites. He also co-authored a paper with colleagues Larry Todd and George Frison, “Bison dentitions, ages, and seasonality at the Murray Springs Site, Arizona” in the book Murray Springs which was published by the University of Arizona Press. Educational Services Division welcomes Sandra Bird as Administrative Assistant, VP Educational Services, replacing retiring Lynn Power. She comes to Douglas with several years of senior administrative experience with TransLink and UBC. Facilities Services welcomes Nancy Constable as Manager of Facilities Services at the David Lam Campus. Constable replaces Louie Girotto who will move to Special Projects to take on new and additional physical plant responsibilities for all campuses. Child, Family and Community Studies welcomes Christine David as Departmental Assistant I. Child and Youth Care Counsellor Instructor Lori Hawkes was recently awarded a Master of Arts in Leadership and Training from Royal Roads University. The Faculty of Science and Technology welcomes two new lab technicians: Rhonda Benke in the Animal Health Technology Program and Ryan Cook in Sport Science. Student Services and Development welcomes Instructional Facilitator Davi Bachra to Career and Employment Preparation. Spomenka Lomigoric, Instructional Facilitator, is moving from the Basic Occupational Education program to join Joy Conran, Faculty, in the Customer Service and Cashier Training Program at the David Lam Campus. The Office for New Students welcomes Melody Puruganan as the new Student Recruitment and Support Specialist at the David Lam Campus. In the Finance department, Claire Turner moves from Accounts Payable to Budget Analyst. Nicole Chabot moves from Accounts Payable to the new position of Accounting Coordinator in the Bookstore. In the Centre for Sport, Recreation and Wellness, Brian McLennon moves from auxiliary to regular as Activities Coordinator replacing Ed Lunn who has moved to Faculty. Sean Velasco moves to the new position of Sports Facility Attendant. Financial Aid’s Michelle Shauer and husband Brian welcomed baby girl Ava Sanne on July 5.
