INSIDE DOUGLAS COLLEGE/NOVEMBER 15, 1988 Editor, Inside Douglas College Dear Sir/Madam, Since the publication in a recent Mad Hatter of an article concern- ing a proposed research project on Bonsai moles, rumours have been flying around the College. It remains unclear what the extent of the project is, how it will be funded and, more importantly, who stands to gain more - Douglas College or the Japanese corporation which in- itiated the research. Whenever there is direct corporate funding of research at an educa- tional institution, important questions arise. The facilities for research at Douglas College are maintained by government funding, which also pays faculty salaries. When a project is undertaken for the ultimate purposes of putting profits into the hands of an outside cor- poration, it’s difficult to avoid the suspicion that taxpayers’ money is in effect subsidising the corporation. Has any thought been given, furthermore, to the extent to which this research project might interfere with the normal delivery of educational services in the College? I think "Inside Douglas College" owes it to the College community to look into this matter in a little more detail. Yours sincerely, John Black, Philosophy and Humanities Discipline P.S. According to my rusty knowledge of Latin roots, a miniature mole could be referred to as a molecule. Does this mean that the Col- lege is now engaged in research in molecular biology? Ed. Note: Mr. Black has brought to our attention some very inter- esting points. However, the "Inside" publication is not staffed for investigative journalism and is unable to dig behind the scenes to get to the root of Mr. Black's concerns. However, it is hoped that with the publication of this letter that Senior Management will respond to the allegations over the "Great Bonsai Mole Story”.
