But the colourful montage on the cover of the latest issue of Event: the Douglas College Review, is an apt representation of the bright array of poetry and prose await- ing the reader inside, and an irresistible invitation to take a glance at the contents of the literary journal. Inside, familiar and unfamiliar names from as near as Maple Ridge and Surrey and as far away as Japan and Germany meet as Event continues its mandate of ex- cellence, regardless of past publishing credits. The 115-page volume is packed with the best in poetry, short stories and reviews by writers ranging from first-time con- tributors to "old hands" at the writing craft. For readers, this means exciting new discoveries along with new works by old favorites. The overall high quality of the writing is underscored by the in- clusion of two stories by Carol Shields, one of Canada’s top con- temporary authors. Ms. Shields, whose latest novel, Swann, was a nominee for the recent Governor General's Award in fiction, visited Douglas College as writer- in-residence early in February. Event, Volume 17/Number 1 is now available in bookstores around the Lower Mainland, or you may subscribe to the three- yearly publication by writing to: Event, Douglas College, P.O.
