January 14, 2004 From The Editor My dear lovelies: What is it that we hate so much about morning? The thing that has us pull the covers back over our heads and hit snooze a couple more times even if we've had a good night’s sleep? I was thinking about the movie Sleepless in Seattle and when Tom Hanks’ character was on the radio show speaking to Dr. Marsha. He said that he couldn't wait to get out of bed in the morning and not have to remind himself to breathe in and out and get on with his day. This man lost his wife. I have lost many things, but nothing or no one as significant as a spouse. So why then do I dread going out into the world each day? I don’t know if I have the post-holiday blues or some- thing but I sure have been less than happy lately and the depressed in winter theory Kali wrote about last semester is starting to ring true. Just this past weekend I got a phone call from depres- sion in its loneliest hour. Begging me to join the pity party. But I said, “Hey depression, I got things to do, a paper to put out, and a kid to look after.” Next time some notice would be nice, ya know? Then I started to really wonder. How many people are down in the dumps and could really use some cheering up, some one to listen to them, some magic in their lives? Probably a lot I bet. I shudder to think how many people are depressed, alone, or just lonely but don’t have the time to actually have those feelings. I always say I'd love a week stay at Riverview but I just don't have the time. Mental health is a serious subject. How can anyone function when they aren't being true to themselves? I would say why put off till tomorrow what you can do today but that is just too cliché. I say to myself, “self, from now on | am not going to take anyone's shit. I am not going to intentionally disappoint anyone. I am going to be the best me I can be.” That is, of course, until I leave my covers. The world is out there just biding time to throw cau- tion to the wind. A wrench in your plans, if you will. I say, celebrate each task you successfully complete. For instance, I read the paper today without incidence. | opened the mail, free of any paper cuts. Small feats, yes, but maybe they are confidence builders. Or maybe I real- ly should give Riverview a call. I guess I am simply saying that I urge you to be who you are, who you truly are. The good, the bad, and the ugly. Lay it all out on the line for yourself. Hey, if does- nt work out—relocate!
