IN Douglas College N Cd S { e December 1997 The Douglas College Newsletter Career Day a hands-on success m New Westminster Campus, David Lam Campus & Thomas Haney Centre Douglas College Career Day, a key component of the Coquitlam Town Centre Exploration Fair held October 29, has been judged a success on several fronts. As students from Port Coquitlam's Minnekhada Middle School (that's teacher Mark Prinster in the middle) explored the messy mysteries of science in the Chemistry Lab, over 5,000 other community members and high school students toured the David Lam Campus to check out College mini-classes, displays and special events. In total, more than 7,000 people explored new facilities throughout Coquitlam Town Centre. Thanks to all departments, faculties and volunteers who worked to make the College's contribution to this event accessible, informative and fun; and kudos to Exploration Fair sponsors CKNW, the Vancouver Grizzlies and Westwood Plateau. Last drive for Solar Oven Project This holiday season, you have the chance to give a gift that changes lives. With funding from the Association of Canadian Community Colleges, Douglas College has established a strong partnership with the Nicaraguan Institute for Popular Education and Research, which supports the Solar Oven Project. The project was set up to improve the quality of life for campesino women and their families, and to contribute to the long-term conservation of Nicaraguan forests by providing an alternative to wood as a source of cooking fuel. Looking back on his 1995 visit to Nicaragua, Solar Oven Project committee member Jamie Gunn says: “I saw the problem. There’s hardly any trees around the Managua area, which has created lots of stress on the environment.” Gunn adds that because of deforestation, women are forced to look for two or three hours a day to find wood, only to spend more time over smoky fires preparing food. “In addition to the health risks involved, these women could be spending this lost time with their families and going to school.” The committee has been able to raise half of its total financial commitment to the project; it’s now up to the Douglas College community to raise $2,000 more. By helping Nicaraguan communities to purchase solar ovens, you contribute to sustainable development, environmental protection and the empowerment of women and families. Please consider making a donation that will help; our goal is now in sight. A tax receipt will be issued for all contributions; cheques should be made out to Douglas College (Solar Oven Project) and sent via intercampus mail to the Foundation at the David Lam Campus. You may donate in person to Cecil Klassen, Jan Gara, Jamie Gunn, Gillies Malnarich or Rose Wilson. @ "Buy a Book" Campaign gets results In 1995, the Douglas College Foundation started its “Buy a Book” Campaign to raise funds for much-needed library acquisitions. While the campaign has now ended, Collections Librarian Joan Wenman is pleased to report that the $3,000 raised has allowed for 75 new titles to appear on New Westminster and Coquitlam shelves. The Foundation has recently designed plaques honoring the donors, which are now on display near the circulating book collections at both campuses. Each title purchased through the “Buy a Book” Campaign has also been marked with a special book-plate. Acquisitions made possible over the last year range from a comprehensive psychiatric nursing reference to a Roch Carrier novel to a Microsoft Encarta World Atlas multimedia package. All titles added to the collection are much appreciated, and most are now ready for access through the Library Catalogue — thanks to all who contributed to the success of this project. i More employees recognized Last issue, INside inadvertently missed the names of several faculty members who should have been included on our “20- plus” list.
