Portfolio project display reveals thoughts, contributions to quality education Dr. Lee Shulman’s talk at Douglas College will be followed by the Portfolio Pilot Project Display and reception. Excerpts from people’s portfolios will be posted on a path from the Performing Arts Theatre, where the talk will be held, across the bridge and along the fourth floor south hallway to the Boardroom. The excerpts from portfolios are only some of the thoughts and experiences which will be shared on May 12. Together with an account of the project and participants’ comments, the entire display will convey the diversity and complexity of teaching and learning at Douglas College. “The popularity of the ‘learning organization’ as a transformative metaphor speaks to a curious reality regarding education institutions such as ours: while teaching and especially learning enjoy a mythologic status in mission statements and Strategic plans, these activities are marginalized in everyday practices.” “The challenge is to find a.way to reach down only far enough in order to bring the students up to acceptable academic standards. This is often a long and arduous process for I am convinced that many, if not most, students bring a ‘microwave’ background with them; that is, they expect that results in education will be instant as are many other things in our present North American society. Notions of ‘slow progress’, ‘perseverance’, and ‘discipline’ seem rather foreign or new to many students.” “These fundamental paradigm shifts...reflect part of my feminist and social constructivist perspective on post- The Lee Shulman Lecture takes place in the Performing Arts Theatre on andi May 12 from secondary education. I want to be part of a group of active change agents in my institution. Working to set up a quality system of prior learning assessment to develop a culture that values all types of quality learning is my current professional goal. This goal will require ongoing and intense professional development on my part.” “In order to explain my philosophy, I will refer to an analogy which I developed at the initial forum: teaching is to learning as guiding is to trekking. I see my role as teacher as that of a guide, a person who indicates a direction and alerts students to impediments on new and exciting journeys. By sharing my own expertise in guiding, I hope that the trekkers will soon learn the techniques to make the journey alone.” “My teaching/learning philosophy centres on the notion that the exchange between instructor and student in a classroom environment is anything but one-sided. I believe that my effectiveness as an instructor depends to a great extent on my ability to respond to the particular dynamics at work in me to be receptive to what students are experiencing in the classroom, in relationship to the material, to each other, and to me...” D.C. sports roundup for 1994-95 season Douglas College’s athletes and coaches wrapped up a good season with the Athletic Awards Banquet on March 31.
