President’s Report Highlights Lloyd Morin Budget Development Discussions continue as each division and department considers alternative strategies for addressing the projected funding shortfall for 1997-98. A very detailed process must be followed to ensure that all provisions of collective agreements are met and that priority programs and services are maintained. Budget principles, assumptions, guidelines, timelines etc., were developed in consultation with the Budget Process Working Group, and were discussed in two open forums on March S. After many more discussions and forums, the Budget will be presented for Board approval on June 19. Adult Basic Education (ABE) College administration, staff, faculty and students pulled together against the government’s stated intention of reducing 1997-98 grants to college ABE by five percent. During their visit to the College on March 10, both the premier and education minister confirmed that there would be no reductions in ABE spaces at colleges. A March 14 ministry advisory reports that college ABE funding levels will be maintained, but a five percent FTE increase within the existing funding will be expected. V3L SB2 Transfer of Student Sections In order to reduce the pressure on space at the New Westminster Campus and to enhance offerings and services at Coquitlam’s David Lam Campus, 200- 300 FTEs will be relocated in the fall of 1997. John McKendry is working with deans to finalize these arrangements. Coquitlam Seniors Discussions are ongoing with seniors’ groups in Coquitlam, and a survey will be conducted this spring to determine their educational needs and interests. First Nations Anne Fenton facilitated a meeting on March 18 with representatives of the First Nations from the Vancouver Native Education Centre and representatives of Douglas College service areas. The meeting’s purpose was to ensure that all groups and agencies understand the expectations and requirements of students and of sponsoring agencies, and that college and agency procedures optimize student access and success. Hungarian Study Tour In early April, several officials from the Hungarian Ministry of Culture and Education will be visiting Douglas College as part of a study tour on continuing distance education for practicing Hungarian nurses. There is a related interest in introducing Psychiatric Nursing to Hungary. §f Evening to honor Dr. David Lam To recognize the achievements of Dr. David Lam, the Douglas College Foundation is organizing a dinner to be held April 23 at Coquitlam’s Westwood Plateau Golf and Country Club. The Friends of David Lam Dinner celebrates Dr. Lam’s 30 years of contributions to Canada, his community work and his support of Douglas College. The event begins at 6:30pm.
