«3a Related to the aforementioned cost issue is the querying of the priority of health and safety issues in times of "restraint". My view is that restraint makes many goals more difficult to achieve. It reduces the number of students we are able to serve, the number of faculty and staff that can be employed, and the quality of the conditions under which employees work and students learn. I take responsibility as the Faculty Association's health and safety representative for synthesizing the health and safety concerns of the membership and for informing them regarding what I see as critical issues. Whether these are taken up in any serious fashion is, of course, a matter of democracy. What I would caution against. though, is the assumption that there must be a choice between jobs and health. The aim of restraint is to restrict whatever can be restricted; the only effective defense is to criticize and challenge it on whatever front it appears. I will be asking the Health and Safety Committee to consider the proposal or reasonable alternatives, based on these results. I urge the employees of the College to contribute to a solution by continuing investigation and debate in whatever forums are appropriate. Connie Broatch
