The Foundation’s 1oth-annual Awards Tea, held on March 28 in the Douglas Room, celebrated the generosity of donors and the hard work of those they support. Donors shared their reasons for contributing to education and presented students with their awards.. Hazel Postma, Associate Vice President, External Relations, told guests that more than 1,800 students received financial assistance last year with awards averaging $500. The College and the Foundation contributed more than $900,000 for student aid in 2006. Monies are collected from donations by College employees as well as from people and companies in communities served by the College. Crina McCann and daughter Michaela receive the Larry Harrison Bursary award presented by Margaret and Larry Harrison. Letters from Uganda Technology will help this year’s Uganda Project team share the journey of a lifetime. Students from the Community Social Service Worker (CSSW) program have set up a blog to document their experiences as they complete their fieldwork in mental health, education, and AIDS-related projects. They will post stories of their work in Masaka, in southern Uganda, as they work with social service organizations such as the Masaka Referral Hospital, Uganda Schizophrenia Fellowship and Uganda Society for Disabled Children. The JNside will follow their progress and feature regular dispatches from CSSW student Shawna Palmquist, who arrived in Uganda at the end of April. “The purpose of our trip is to practice the skills that we have learned through the Community Social Service Worker Program. We want to empower people and their communities by providing them with genuine care and support. We all feel very fortunate to be part of this wonderful project and look forward to sharing our journey,” says Palmquist. A photo project is also in the works. “Our students will take a small photo printer and some inexpensive digital cameras to give to the Uganadan students so they can take pictures of their families. Our students will then print copies for them. Most will never have had a picture taken of them before,” says CSSW instructor John Fox.
