Canada-USSR Academic and Scientific Exchanges for Senior Scholars and Specialists Within the framework of the General Exchanges Agreement, the Department of External Affairs is spon- soring a Canada-USSR program of academic and scien- tific exchanges for senior scholars and specialists. Exchange programs are available with the Soviet Academy of Sciences (described below in Category A) and with the State Committee for Public Education (described below as Category B). The Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada (AUCC) is the Canadian administrative agency responsible for the ex- changes. Graduate and post-doctoral student exchanges are also available with the State Committee for Public Education. Fields of Study Study or research in all areas of pure and applied sciences, social sciences, humanities, music and fine arts. This applies to both categories of exchanges. Number of Participants Category a) maximum of fifteen annually Category b) maximum of five annually Duration Category a) one to six months each Category b) one to five months each Value Travel expenses to and from USSR. Conditions Candidates must be senior scholars and specialists who have a demonstrated interest in conducting re- search in the USSR. Each application must identify the program category (a or b) and be accompanied by a coherent research proposal which meets the standards of professional scholarship. It is essential that a com- pleted data sheet listing all institutions, universities, libraries and/or archives where the participant plans to carry out the proposal is submitted as well. The specific starting and ending dates of the proposed pro- gram must also be included. Three letters of appraisal of the candidate's applica- tion must be sent no later than the application deadline directly to the address below. Candidates must be Canadian citizens or landed immigrants. Nominees will be selected by a Committee of experts appointed by the AUCC with proper regard to linguistic and regional representation.
