a College sports update CCAA competition at Douglas B College hit full stride in January as the volleyball and basketball teams moved into the meat of their schedules and the badminton team wrapped up its regular season. The members of the wrestling team are limbering up for their shots at qualifying for the Atlanta Olympics. Here’s a team-by- team summary of Douglas College’s athletic adventures in the new year. Wrestling The Douglas College Wrestling Club traveled to Phoenix, Arizona over the Christmas break for a training camp and a competition. The training camp paid off when the club finished the Phoenix Open tournament with its wrestlers topping four podiums. Since the Phoenix Open, the team has competed in the Clackamus College Open and the Portland State University Open. The Wrestling Club is now setting out on the road to Atlanta ‘96. On February 2, Douglas College wrestlers begin Olympic trials and qualification tournaments in Thunder Bay, Ontario. The winners will represent Canada in Cali, Columbia at the Pan American Olympic qualification event. Women’s Volleyball The Women’s Volleyball team ended the year ona winning note by edging the touring Medicine Hat Rattlers three games to two on December 29. Picking up where they left off, the team went on the road to sweep both the Camosun Chargers January 12 and Langara Falcons on the 13. After losing to the CCAA number 3- ranked Malaspina Mariners, the squad came back to defeat the ‘University College of the Cariboo Sun Demons January 27. The victory guarantees the team a berth in the 1996 BCCAA Women’s Volleyball Championships. Men’s Volleyball The Men’s Volleyball squad braved a 15-hour van ride and -30° weather to compete in the Grande Prairie College Tournament January 4-6. Overcoming injuries and a shallow bench, the team Sl Women’s Basketball After closing 1995 with a close loss to Western Baptist College, the Women’s Basketball team hit its stride and defeated the Camosun College Chargers on January 14, Capilano College on the 19th, the BCCAA number 3- ranked Trinity Western University on the 24th, and then posted a double win over the College of New Caledonia on the 26th and 27th. The wins improve the team’s BCCAA record to 9 - 4. Men’s Basketball While the Men’s Basketball team closed the year with a loss to Spokane Community College on December 30, it recovered quickly to defeat the Camosun Chargers January 14. The team has since lost a couple against the Capilano Community College Blues and Trinity Western University, and traded wins with the College of New Caledonia Kodiaks. Badminton Tomomi Okhubo and Kyoko Yamada won the Women’s Doubles to Point guard Lori Phillip of the Douglas College Women’s Basketball Team in action against the College of New Caledonia Kodiaks on January 26. The Royals defeated the Kodiaks in two matches that weekend. lead the Douglas College Badminton team to a fourth place finish at the third BCCAA tournament in Kamloops January 13 and 14. At the final regular season tournament of the year - hosted by Douglas College - the team slipped a spot to finish fifth with Ohkubo and Yamada placing 2nd, Michael Yang and Yoyoi Koshimasra placing 3rd in the Mixed Doubles, and Thong Nguyen placing 3rd in the Men’s Singles. I fought its way to the final where it lost to Grant MacEwan in four tough games. After dropping an exhibition match to Camosun College January 12, the team defeated the Langara Falcons on the 13th, the Malaspina Mariners on the 20th, and the University College of the Cariboo Sun Demons on the 27th to improve its BCCAA record to 8 - 0.
