TO: DOUGLAS COLLEGE BOARD March 17, 1988. oS ee Government is apparently also concerned for the need to do more Systematic long range planning, and an announcement has been made recently that the province will be attempting to create a 10 year planning horizon for all ministries. | “Project Literacy B.C." met at Douglas College on February 22nd to examine means by which literacy training could be made available to people working in an industrial environment, and on shift work. The meeting was attended by interested faculty from a number of colleges, volunteers, representatives of UBC, the labour movement, and some college administrators. On February 24, the first meeting of the B.C. Educational Association of Disabled Students was held at the Four Seasons Hotel. It was a pleasure to acknowledge the major contribution of Gladys Loewen to the field, in not only making available opportunities for disabled Students in this College and others, but also in helping them create their own advocacy structure. A sum of money is being made available on a one-time-only basis to the colleges and institutes of the province, through the federal government. This funding is to enhance "third party" contracts between colleges and sponsoring businesses and agents in the area of vocational] training through the Canadian Jobs Strategy. Douglas is well positioned to apply for support in this area, owing to the developmental work done by Rita Chudnovsky of the Community Programs & Services Division. Today, March 17, the Northwest Academic Advisers Conference met at Douglas College. There were representatives of colleges, institutes and universities from the American Pacific Northwest, Alaska, Alberta and British Columbia. The Conference was organized and managed by Lorraine Cotter, Georgina Ferguson, Amanda Harley, Sharon Helgeson, and Linda Steiler, with assistance from the Community Programs & Services Division. Ce Internal Matters - Education On February 25, the Maple Ridge Adult Basic Education graduation occurred. It was well attended by Administration, Board Members and Douglas College Faculty, as well as by representatives of Maple Ridge School District. On March 10, Bill Morfey, Jim Doerr and I met with officials from Maple Ridge School District and the Municipality to discuss long range physical plant development in Maple Ridge. As a result of this, a presentation will be made to the Ministers of Education and Advanced Education & Job Training, probably involving the Chairman of our Board, the Chairman of the Maple Ridge School Board, and the Mayor of Maple Ridge. ee eee
