Gerry Della Mattia Douglas College to benefit New Funds for Colleges Announced VICTORIA - Post-Secondary Education Minister Russell Fraser announced today an allocation of $4.4. million to British Columbia's colleges and institutes under the Excellence in Education fund. The funds are in addition to the colleges’ base operating budgets and will be used to address non-salary inflation costs, provide for rural multi-campus centres and fund the Business Development Centres in colleges. The Minister was joined by MLA John Parks (Maillardville-Coquitlam) in announcing that the Douglas College allocation includes $80,000 to continue operating the Douglas Centre for Enterprise Development. The Centre - which provides assistance and advice to new business enterprises - was established last year with seed money from the Provincial Government. "This new allocation is the first funding increase for colleges and institutes to be announced under the Excellence in Education fund unveiled by Premier Bennett February 11 and followsa meeting | held recently with college officials," said Fraser. Fraser noted the purpose of the Excellence in Education fund is two-fold. It will be spent on: * Adjustments to the operating budgets of schools, colleges and universities. * Special initiatives to improve the quality of instruction, to respond to economic development opportunities and to modernize facilities and improve efficiency. The $110 million in first-year funding represents | an increase in education spending of more than six per cent. Fraser said today's allocation will provide a province wide total of $2.3 million for colleges to cover non-salary inflation costs, $1.3 million for Business Development Centres and $800,000 in additional funds for multi-campus operations. "A substantial number of new businesses have been established as a result of the establishment of these centres and I am pleased to see support continue through the Excellence in Education fund," Fraser said. Fraser noted that in addition to $80,000 in grants to 14 colleges and institutes for the centre today's allocation will provide $50,000 each to four colleges to continue funding micro-computer labs (at New Caledonia in Prince George and Okanagan College) and two aquaculture ventures (at Malaspina College in Nanaimo and Capilano College in North Vancouver). The $800,000 announced for multi-campus operations will bring total funding to more than $2 million. The funding is provided to colleges in non-metropolitan areas that have major core campuses and also operate substantial satellite centres. "This funding is in recognition of the support costs required to operate these largely self- contained centres," Fraser said. "We recognize these multi-campus centres as key links in the provision of educational services on an equitable basis and I am pleased that 13 centres across B.C. will receive this additional support," Fraser said.
