MAD HATTER PAGE 11 pets eee T PRESIDENT’S REPORT TO THE DOUGLAS COLLEGE BOARD November 19, 1981 External Matters - Municipal At the suggestion of the Education and Services Committee, I have contacted Mayor Tonn for an informal discussion on possible lines of College develop- ment in Coquitlam. I will be contact- ing the Mayors of other municipal governments within School District No. 43 as soon as possible. Mayor Evers has requested a formal presentation to New Westminster Council on Wednesday, November 25th, regarding Douglas College aspirations regarding Simcoe Park. I hope that our Chairman and other Board members may be able to attend this important meeting. A tour has been set up for members of the Board of Directors of Beacon Industries to look at our present . buildings on the McBride Site, in the light of their possible use by Beacon Industries, if we are able to organize an appropriate land transaction. Work is in progress regarding the acquisition of provincial acreage for use by Beacon Industries as an altern- ative to their present use of Simcoe Park space. In this connection, I have held a meeting with Dr. Pauline Hughes, Executive Director of the Woodlands School, in order to apprise her of developments. I intend to have a meet~- ing with the Director of the Queens Park Extended Care Hospital for the same purpose. External Matters - Education We have received notice from Mr. G. Shuttleworth, of the Ministry of Education, that the Treasury Board has ‘Thi: — “7 Pt tT te T T 1 re ’ public meeting. approved our final draft of Capital for completion of the New Westminster Permanent Campus. Mr. Shuttleworth extended verbal congratulations for the calibre of the work done to date. Il participated in the opening of the Eagleridge Elementary School in Coquitlam. Mrs. Chute, in introducing me, made reference to the role of Douglas College as the community college for Coquitlam. Mr. Bill Johnstone and a number of other college-related persons were at this . spoke at the second annual provincial conference on Family Learning, sponsored by the Ministry of Education and the B.C. Council for the Family. Lillian Zimmeramn, of the Community Programs and Services Division was a featured speaker. This conference was well attended, obviously has a strong level of community as well as political support, and bespeaks a possible significant emphasis on family life education for the future. The Community Programs and Services Division is consider- ing increased activity in this area and that of gerentology at this time. The Board will be apprised of possible lines of development as these become clear. Internal Matters - Education Development In addition to the lines of development mentioned in the preceding section, other work is proceeding.
