Behind the scenes of Douglas College in New Westminster a network of “silent partners” provide access and quality education for students with special needs. Without the help of non-profit organizations, a wide range of services would not exist. The Simon Fraser Society for Mentally Handicapped People, one such organiza- tion, works with the college and the Ministry of Social Services, to provide job train- ing and other life skills for mentally handicapped adults. “We couldn't get along without them,” says instructor Don Allen, one of two regular faculty members in the program. “We are truly community-dependent.” Originally proposed by the Simon Fraser Society in 1981, the Consumer and Job Preparation Program for Mentally Handicapped Adults was jointly developed by the society, the college and the Ministry of Education.
