Ss Monts, Douglas College Hockey Team? Maybe...just maybe.... By Josh Martin, Sports Editor ot playing hockey this year N= been harder than I have expected, especially now that the NHL season has started and I’m forced to watch the games without partaking in my own. Yup, watching the Canucks games and talking about hockey is one thing, but actually playing is on a “whole ‘nother level.” Every year in my past, dating back to the beginning of middle school, the start of the school year has always been so much easier knowing that it was also the start of something else...my hockey season. So when I made the transition from high school to post-secondary, a decision had to be made about whether or not I would continue to play hockey during college, and with paying tuition and such I came to the conclusion that it was best to focus on my studies instead. Now heading into the month of November, it has been a strange feeling, not playing the sport that I love. I truly miss it. A couple weeks ago I was astonished when I came across an advertisement at Douglas College about organizing a team to play hockey...WHAT?! As soon as I saw this I was immediately excited and jumped on the opportunity to do 20 whatever I can to hit the ice again. Now there is a Facebook group regarding the topic and our first meeting is scheduled for November 1 to discuss the basics and details to come up with a team. Currently there are 20 members in the group. It will be interesting to see how all of these details will work out and whether or not we will get the answers to the many questions that stand in the way; with ice time, joining a league, team jerseys, and most importantly the team’s skill level overall. There are definitely going to be some stronger players than others, so I wouldn’t be surprised if there were try-outs to make the team, especially with opposing teams that may have the power to destroy us. It’s hard to say how long it will take to get everything completely organized. Being the first possible Douglas College Ice Hockey team is a huge deal and a great attempt that hopefully will all work out in the end. This can be the start of something great for years to come. At this point I don’t care if we get dominated and pummelled by other teams, I don’t care if our team is competitive or not, and I don’t care if we ever win a game... I’m just glad to have the chance to play the game once again at the school that I’m going to. NBA Season Starts! By Josh Martin, Sports Editor he 2010-2011 NBA regular season is underway. This year is looking very promising for several teams, especially the Miami Heat who had a complete makeover to their roster during the offseason. The Heat started their season off with an 88-80 loss to the Boston Celtics where the big three, Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh, and LeBron James, didn’t exactly click and find the chemistry to come out with the win. Although, LeBron did have a stellar game, scoring a game-high of 31 points to pull the Heat within three with just over a minute left, It wasn’t quite enough. Bosh finished with just eight points and eight rebounds while Wade only scored 13 points and went 4-16 on shooting. The highly anticipated Heat left their fans disappointed with such a huge hype leading up to the season opener. “I’m sorry if everyone thought we were going to go 82-0,” Wade said. “It just isn’t happening.” The three superstars each took a pay cut in the offseason in order to play together this year and have a chance at winning the championship. “We didn’t do this just to be regular guys and be a regular team. We wanted to be one of the great teams to ever play this game,” said Bosh. The following night the Heat earned their first win of the season against the Philadelphia 76’ers, by a final score of 97-87. Wade rebounded from the season opener with a 30 point night while LeBron added 16. LeBron will be looked at this season to play in the post position, something that the reigning MVP isn’t quite familiar with. Playing in his past years with the Cleveland Cavaliers, he handled the ball on the perimeter almost exclusively, but Heat coach Erik Spoelstra will be patient knowing that his team needs some sort of post presence to be successful offensively. The Toronto Raptors begin their season without their former star Chris Bosh who has notably moved down to Miami. The Raptors lost their first game of the season to the New York Knicks, 98-93. The expectations of this team are not really set in stone, with not a real good sense of what they can do with the current roster. The only real glimpse of hope that the Raptors have is with Andrea Bargnani. Bargnani is locked up for five more years which gives plenty of time for the young 25 year old to establish himself as a leader in the Raptors organization. Toronto hasn’t really expressed any interest in replacing the piece that is missing (Bosh) so it’s going to come down the younger guys stepping it up if there is any chance of Canada’s only NBA franchise doing well this season CARDIO BOXING TONY Pep BoxING & FITNESS -Located at the Corner of 6th Street & Royal Ave- *$80 per Month for UNLIMITED Basic Open Gym* *$70 per Month with 3 Month Sign Up for Basic Open Gym* *$10 per Day Drop In Fee for Basic Open Gym* (Mon/Wed 6:30-9 pm; Tues/Thurs/Fri 5-9 pm & Sat 1-5 pm) $60 per Month for 4 Sessions or $120 per Month for 8 Ses- sions IRCUIT TRAINING CLASSE &
