4) Accessibility: New Westminster is at your doorstep at NWC with Columbia Street just south, and Uptown only a short jog uphill. Some decent restaurants, bars, and pizza joints are located within a block, and transport to many other popular destinations is just a train ride away. Or, you could hang out with the high school kids on your lunch break at David Lam... 5) Finally, the best reason to be attending classes at NWC is... livability: New Westminster is a much cheaper and therefore affordable city to live in, especially for full time students. Everything is close; apartments are everywhere, and cheap eateries are plentiful. For a student on a budget, living in New West can be a godsend. DLC patrons usually have to drive, or make a special effort to get out to campus every day, and that can sometimes be a real pain in the ass. David Lam second to none Douglas College’s David Lam campus is like the New Westminster Campus’ cooler younger brother. Updated with all the new technology and goodies that New Westminster is so jealous of, David Lam is the kid with all the perks. As the newer of the two main campuses, David Lam is the much more student-friendly one. It has been thought out better and means a better student experience. It is the fastest growing campus at Douglas College. As such, it has better amenities for students to enjoy. Unlike the New Westminster campus, David Lam has a Tim Horton’s, which exists to satisfy the sweet tooth of each student at the David Lam campus. New Westminster? All the older brother has is Chartwell’s. This has very little to offer New Westminster students outside of overpriced food and long lineups at lunchtime. David Lam is aesthetically pleasing which is more than anyone can say about the New Westminster Campus. With a lake and a community centre within walking distance there is little doubt that the facilities offer more to the average student for recreational activities. David Lam is by far the more beautiful of the two campuses with its curves and windows. New Westminster is like a block of concrete with very little windows and no comfortable seating. David Lam, on the other hand, has cushy chairs in the atrium and a multitude of seating throughout the campus including study tables on the third floor. However, the best part of the architecture is the Stacks. This is where the books are kept in the library. The area is underneath the main floor of the library and is cooler in the summer. There are study spaces by the windows and there is hardly anyone ever there. It’s much quieter than the New Westminster library, which makes it nearly a utopian library where you can actually study quietly without fear of interruption. David Lam is often forgotten by groups at Douglas, but that is one of the largest tragedies of the school. However, in recent years, the David Lam campus is getting more and more attention. I hope that in the future this beautiful and arguably better of the two campuses begins to get the attention that it deserves in the form of more classes and sections. By Wendy A. Case
