Wriretighters When the Vancouver Fire Department last held a
recruiting drive three years ago, 6,000 people applied. Of 20 women ap-
plicants, none were successful.

To help women beat the odds, a special course is being offered at
Douglas College this summer. It’s designed to help women build their
upper body strength, and to improve cardiovascular performance. The
course also helps build technical skills, and examines the lifestyle and
emotional demands of a career in firefighting.
