douglas college Inter Office Memo Date: february 21, 1985 To: DOUGLAS COLLEGE BOARD From: W.L. DAY eu Oe, Re: __PRESIDENT'S REPORT A. External Matters - Municipal ———$________— The College was visited by the Capital Region Economic Development Commission on February 15th, as part of a tour of the lower mainland. They were here at the suggestion of the Greater Vancouver Regional District, because of their interest in the involvement of the College in the planning for the economic redevelopment of this area. The College will be sharing in a sizeable grant from the federal government to the Royal City Development group to further this work. The College has received a gift of a full size theatre screen from the Lougheed Triple Cinema, that, once rigged, will enable us to project commercial quality moving pictures in the theatre. I have sent a letter of thanks to the manager on behalf of the College. During January, the Downtown New Westminster Association Board of Directors met twice, on matters relating to the impact of the ALRT station, and redevelopment of Columbia street and Twelfth Street. The College is playing a growing role as a social partner in these plans. Simultaneously, College personnel are actively involved with the Chambers of Commerce in Coquitlam in the development of their economic profile. In this regard, I will be attending a meeting at the end of this month to discuss ways in which the College can be of further assistance. It is clear that locally initiated economic development has become a major consideration of federal and provincial govern- ments. As a result of our activities over the past 18 months the College is well positioned to play its part. The Board can look forward to an increased interaction with local governments and the economic community. B. External Matters - Education On January 18th, I met with Mr. Bill Miller, of the Ministry of Industry and Small Business, to discuss College involvement in the development of new business in the College region. Mr. Miller has proposed a number of initiatives that would be appropriate for the College, as a result of the experience with the Royal City Development Group. The Education & Services Committee of the Board will be tabling initiatives in this regard later on in this meeting. On January 23rd, I made a presentation to the Board of Directors of the B.C. Central Credit Union, regarding the future directions for post- secondary education in this province. As a result of this, we have been approached regarding offering of community programs relating to co- operative enterprise development.
