Bnd. Another summer of sequels and jazz By Jay Schreiber fter several long months of classrooms, studying, and Are behavior, the summer months present new opportunities in the arts. In movies, like in the past, this summer is all about sequels and remakes with several big blockbusters coming to a theatre near you. Angels and Demons, the second part to 2006’s Da Vinci Code is set to be another religious and historical romp through history. Back again for more action is Tom Hanks as well as newcomer to the series Ewan McGregor. Ron Howard is directing again for the second time. Love it or hate it, sequels will be popular this year with a new X-Men installment focused solely on Wolverine and his origins. This may be a snooze-fest seeing as Hugh Jackman has always been the center of attention in the X-Men trilogy but another excuse to blow stuff up is always welcome. Terminator 74%, Salvation, is set to hit theatres on May 21* staring Christian Bale and Helena Bonham Carter. After the apocalypse, the year 2018 has robots taking over in mass numbers with as many twists and turns as the Sea to Sky Highway. No Arnie this time around, but the Govenator has been rumored to have a small cameo somewhere in the film. J.J. Abrams has stuck his head in a guillotine and hopes nobody drops the blade with his new film Star Trek. Perhaps the most sensitive area of science fiction, a completely new cast will re-enact the sci-fi spectacle with hopes of giving a new edge to this almost perfect series. Trekkies everywhere have their fingers crossed. In music, infamous punk band Rancid are set to release their first album in six years entitled Let the Dominos Fall. This will be the first release since 2003’s Indestructible and the first without long-time drummer Brett Reid. In 2006, after their North American tour, Brett Reid announced that he was leaving the band and “Taking a break.” However, the band is still as relevant as their 1995 heyday, and these ska-punkers are still going strong. Two of the most frightening faces in music, Marilyn Manson and Iggy Pop, are both releasing new albums due out around the end of May, while Eminem still hasn’t retired with his new album Relapse. All of the previous have made a name for themselves and are releasing albums as more or less “padding” to their already full careers. From June 26" till July 5", Vancouver is hosting the International Jazz Festival, a definite musical highlight of every year. This year features performances by David Sanborn, Celso Michado, the Kenny Werner Quintet plus tributes to Miles Davis and loads of free concerts and events around Vancouver. 14 sinsadlaalasd Andrew Airlie The Captain of Breaker High was one of the few non-Canadians to star on the television program. Originally born in Glasgow, Scotland, Andrew pulled up anchor and made his way over to North America and kick started his acting career. Starring in low budget movies and bit parts on television, the Scottish lad soon landed his role as the overseeing captain in Breaker High. Since the Burnaby-based show ended, Andrew has continued his career as a part actor in programs such as the X-Files, The Outer Limits, Smallville, Stargate SG-1, and Da Vinci's Inquest. His largest role to date would have to be on the TV program Reaper, where he starred for over 20 episodes. Scott Vickaryous Scott Vickaryous was born in Port Alberni, BC and played the captain’s son, Max Ballard onboard Breaker High. After growing up in Alberta, he debuted on Breaker High, and has only played bit parts in select TV shows since. Making one-shot stops on TV programs such as The Outer Limits, Viper, and Poltergeist helped pad his resume and he got managed to get regular spots on Get Real and Boston Public. In the last eight years or so, Scott hasn’t had much action after being reduced to bit parts on TV programs Cold Case and The Division. It seems as though, with not much recent action in TV and without making the shift to movies, his ship has sailed. Terri Colombino Blonde bombshell Terri Colombino played Ashley Dupree on the seafaring adventures of Breaker High. Born in Indiana, Ashley started her career in television staring in soap operas, and has never ventured far from that genre. While filming Breaker High, Terri was a brunette, but has since changed her colour for acting purposes. After graduating from breaker high, Terri landed a role as Katie Peretti on As the World Turns where she has starred for over 550 episodes. It is difficult to find a teenage boy who watched Breaker High and didn’t fantasize about spending some cabin time with Mrs. Colombino. Ryan Gosling Perhaps the most famous and prolific of all the crew members aboard Breaker High, this TV show was just the first port of many stops in Ryan Gosling’s career. Born in London, Ontario, Ryan Gosling gained fame in the football movie Remember the Titans. Since then, he has starred in such movies as Murder by Numbers, and played the voice of Hercules in the popular children’s program. His biggest role came in 2004, when he played along side Rachel McAdams in The Notebook, a movie which made teenage girls cry and resulted in boyfriends worldwide getting laid. Ryan Gosling was nominated for an Oscar in 2006 for his role in the movie Half Nelson, and his career is continuing to get more diverse.
