November 30, 1994 Royal guard king of the hoops, scores 48 by Bert C. Ennah The story of the weekend was easily the play of Royal guard Stavros Pavlidis, whose intense play and deadly sweet shot earned him 48 points over a two game span. On Friday, Pavlidis led the field with 25 points against the Malaspina Mariners. Alas, itavas in a losing cause, as the Malaspina squad walked away with a 73-59 win. The Mariners are the reigning Ca- nadian champs, having defeated our Royals in last year’s National Finals. With a roster that looks much like last year’s, the Mariners are an experienced team that’s hard to beat. The Royals, with many rookies surrounding a few veterans, just didn’t have the experienced legs to keep up with the Mariners. Our guys put up a valiant effort, keeping within three (38-35) for the first half, but in the end just couldn’t keep up. It was the Royals that took charge against the Falcons Saturday and dic- tated the game. Led by Pavlidis’ 23 points and Chad Caldwell’s cool-as-a- proverbial-cucumber all-around play, Douglas earned a 73-62 victory. Langara played catch-up ball al- most from the first whistle, with our boys taking a 37-25 lead into the half. The Falcons came out fighting in the second, tying the game at 47 at one point. Several stunning drives and fault- less shooting from the line by Pavlidis woke up the home team. Some smart Royal ball and Falcon foul trouble were just formalities before the final buzzer shut the door on this Royal win. In other recent games, the Royal men lost 82-51 at Trinity Western Uni- versity Spartans and 116-52 while vis- iting the powerhouse Southern Idaho Golden Eagles, while posting a huge 82- 76 win versus the league rival Fraser Valley Cascades. Next up is a December 2 hook up with Capilano College at the Cap. photo by Zeebo Stavros Pavlidis powers by an opponent in a game earlier this season. Pavlidis scored an amazing 48 points in two games this weekend. Women undefeated at home Lady Royals queens of their own court, win two more here at Douglas by Bert C. Ennah Chalk up two more wins for the Queens of the court. Our Royal women remain undefeated at home this season, fillet- ing the Mariners 62-44 and grounding the Falcons 73-62. Against a seemedly seasick Malaspina, the Royals cruised through the second half after taking a 28-21 lead into the half. The Royal attack was a machine, led by Janice Mackintosh and Marlee Siemens with 18 points apiece. Siemens won player of the game hon- ours with her solid play, owning the court under both baskets. Mariner Karen Davies potted 16 in the losing cause. Against the Falcons, it looked like the ladies would repeat the earlier night’s performance, taking a 39-16 lead into the half. A little cockiness and a lack of focus allowed Langara to close within five points, but Douglas recov- ered in time to salvage the win. Player of the game Sheri Zimmerman, scored 13 points for Douglas, while Falcon captain Kelly Anne Logan netted 18 for the losing th WESTMINSTER squad. The two wins come on the heels of consecutive losses the previous weekend, 62-55 versus the TWU Spartans and 62-50 at the hands of Fraser Valley. The team seemed upbeat despite the losses. Considering the strength of Fraser Valley and the relatively close final score, they can't wait to hook up with them again. The TWU loss was a bit of a shock, an upset even, and came with some con- centration lapses similar to those against Langara. The Royal Women put their focus to the test once more at Capilano Col- lege on December 2.
