This program presents a thumbnail sketch of children's literature and traces its evolution through history. The program attempts to define children's literature and to show there is a relationship between the nature of literature written for children and the prevailing attitudes and concerns of the society of the time. V.2 Storytelling: Continuing the Oral Tradition 30 mins. This program is about storytelling; it looks at what storytelling is, explains why storytelling is so important and pervasive, and it demonstrates how to tell a story. V.3 Using Literature with Children (Storydrama) 30 mins This program about dramatizing a story examines ways to help children appreciate and understand their reading through dramatic exploration. To Prepare a Child 16 mm and 23 mins. guidelines Uses the experiences of three children and their families in order to stress the importance of preparing a child emotion- ally for a hospitalization experience. Wasting Away: Understanding Anorexia VHS and 40 mins. Nervosa and Bulimia: teacher's guide. This presentation uses a selection of vignettes to characterize typical anorexic and bulimic behaviour. These case studies emphasize the psychological side of the disorders, pointing out the combinations of adolescent stresses, personality types and family/social situations that can precipitate problems. Typical abnormal behaviours are explored in detail: anxiety, distorted self-images, the need to please, guilt, etc., along with physical symptoms and psychological effects. The program concludes on a hopeful note, detailing the individual and family Oo therapies that can lead to understanding, recovery and cure.
