"You find ways to bluff your way through situations when people use big words you don't understand. All| you're really doing is fooling yourself." Her reading skills needed improvement, and going back to school at 30 years old was an opportunity to finally help her children get more out of their own education. Betty had just overcome problems at home as a single mother with two children. She originally expected her new classes at Douglas College to compound the situation. Like a lot of mature people who require skill upgrading, Betty enrolled in Adult Basic Education (ABE). "| was so gung-ho at first, finally learning how to read, that | sort of went overboard," she says. "After the first semester | was so burnt out | wanted to quit, but one of my teachers talked me into taking part-time classes." "I'm glad | agreed."
