John Collins of the Douglas College Men’s Soccer team in a game vs. Capilano on September 23. Women’s Volleyball With last year’s squad notching a silver-medal season in CCAA competition, the 1995-96 Douglas College Women’s Volleyball team has their work cut out for them. Coach Dave Dalcanale believes that this year’s squad is still strong, but will need to learn to play as a team to meet the standard set by last year’s players. After a disappointing opener against Trinity Western University, the team pulled together for a solid win over the University College of the Cariboo. Women’s Golf The Women’s Golf team continues to grow with six players now joining Coach Tara Smetany for regular practice at the Westwood Plateau Golf and Country Club. With their first tournament successfully behind them, Smetany reports that a good time is being had by all and that there is plenty of room for more players. While the team’s focus remains on fun rather than competition, Smetany sees particular promise in the play of Alalon Peterson and Lynn Chornobrywy. Women’s Basketball Coach Alison Gill’s goal of making the Douglas College Women’s Basketball team the best rebounding and defensive squad in the league paid off in their season-opening win against Everett Community College on October 28. The Royals dominated the boards with 35 rebounds and earned half their points with defensive pressure leading to fast breaks. With impressive recruits and a solid core of veterans, the team looks prepared for a serious run at the BCCAA Championship. Men’s Basketball A new squad with only one returning player and a new coach in his first year at Douglas College makes the Men’s Basketball team the new season’s biggest unknown. Judging by its strong exhibition showings, the team’s youth and inexperience is less important than its work ethic and tough play. Coach David Smith will be counting on returning veteran Ben Mayan and talented newcomers like Jon Fast and Cam Johnson to anchor the squad. Assistant Coach Dave Munroe predicts a steep learning curve resulting in an intimidating team come spring time. Wrestling Wrestling coach Dave McKay feels the 1995-96 team has the most talent of any he has coached, with the strong potential of a number of young competitors adding to the proven skills two-time Olympian Nasir Lal and aspiring Olympian Daniel Igali. They’ Il need all the talent they can get: following the season opener in Calgary on November | 1 they’ ll be attending competitions on five straight weekends. I pis Men’s Golf Team wins fifth After winning five BCCAA gold medals in five years, golfing coach Gert Van Neikerk has proven that he knows what it takes to build winning teams. The key, he says, is recruitment. “We never stop recruiting, we do it 12 months a year. We start approaching high school kids in January so we can have them playing with the team by spring.” Getting the young players out on the course and learning from their peers has been a consistent path to success for the Douglas College team. While a gold-medal season is full of high points, Van Niekerk relished his team’s nine-stroke victory _ over the powerful UBC team the most. Th Douglas College team made coun use of its home-course play schedule co that of the BCCAA. T! would allow his t play competitive round, improving thei skills and maintaining competitive edge. |
