He’s already won three straight championships, but golf coach Gert van Niekerk isn’t interested in sharing the BCCAA silverware. Title tee time If golf aficionados were to follow the sign-waving example of other sports fans, you could expect a Douglas College supporter to journey the greens and fairways this fall carrying a sign that reads: “The Drive for Four in 794.” Of course, golf fans just don’t do that sort of thing, but the desire to capture a fourth-consecutive BCCAA golfing championship is still very much on the mind of Royals’ coach Gert van Niekerk. Gert’s golfers have dominated the five-team B.C. college circuit since the late 1980s; they’ ve won three straight provincial titles and four out of the last six. To keep the drive alive against increasingly competitive challengers, van Niekerk has looked to recruiting, additional tournaments and plenty of off- season golf on the team’s home turf, the Belmont Golf Course in Langley. “T think a lot of our success has come from recruiting. I’ve made an effort to do some research to find good people,” said van Niekerk. “What makes it a little bit easier is that golfers are attracted to a successful team. It’s the same as in any other sport.” An extended season has also been helpful. The Douglas College team generally carries about 10 golfers, although only six may enter any one BCCAA tournament. The extra players 4 are permitted to play in spring events at the University of B.C. and Washington state, with most stepping up to compete 8 conference play the following fall. The latest, and very significant, ingredient in the Royals golf team mix, was the addition of the Belmont home course. Belmont allows College team golfers to play free of charge and also hosts the team’s October conference tournament. During last summer, an average of two Royals foursomes tested themselves against Belmont’s five artificial lakes and 70-plus bunkers - 6,416 yards from tee-off to final putt. The result has been some rather reassuring new math. “Tt’s really helped the players,” said van Niekerk. “Roger Gilhespy is my senior player this year, and the practice has taken about seven or eight strokes off his game. He’s shooting a steady 75-76 now.” As the team heads into its new season, van Niekerk is attempting to add some new wrinkles. The coach is organizing a Douglas College spring tournament, which would include university players. He’d also like to see some women teeing off. There is presently no BCCAA women’s golf conference, but anyone interested in playing an exhibition season should contact van Niekerk at 527-5042. 8
