MAD HATTER 9 THE TALKING FREDS Who are the Freds and why do they talk? The Talking Freds, appearing February 27 at 1230 hours in the Douglas College Lower Cafeteria, are a duo of political satirists, in song. The duo consists of Fred, who is John Black, and Fred, who is Jim Sands. They sing, as Black puts it, "coffee house folk." The Talking Freds have been together for months and have already acquired notoriety for their recent show at La Quena, on Commercial Drive. Black, a Humanities instructor at Douglas College, works on Red Eye, a contemporary affairs program at Co-op Radio, where Sands also works. One of Freds' songs is "Los Socredos', a satire placing the Socred government in Latin America. Although most of the parody is aimed at the present parties in power, the left gets its share, just to keep everyone happy. The musical style of the Talking Freds ranges from the Talking Heads to Bill Bragg, with lots of patter in between. There has also been a rumor that Bill Benido and his side kick Gracias McCarthy may make a guest appearance for this very humorous special event. This Humanities Institute event is free and open to the public. , - DOUGLAS COLLEGE NEWS SERVICES HAS ANYONE SEEN TIFFANY?
