Babies face bright scholastic future They may become physicists or pharmacists, chemists or choreog- raphers, but whatever they decide, eighteen babies are already on their way to a college education. All the babies had to do was make sure they were born on November 19, 1989, which was designated “Douglas Day” to honor the College’s namesake, Sir James Douglas. The Douglas College board of directors decided to award free entrance scholarships to all babies born at three Lower Mainland hospitals on that day as part of the College’s 20th anniversary celebra- tion. As part of the 20th anniversary celebration, the College awarded scholarships to a total of elghteen babies who were born at Burnaby Hospital, Royal Columbian Hospital and Maple Ridge Hospital on November 19, 1989 — the day the College honors Its namesake, Sir James Douglas, B.C.’s first lieutenant governor. mothers, eleven boys and seven girls entered the world at Burnaby Hospital, Royal Columbian Hospi- tal, and Maple Ridge Hospital. They received their free entrance scholarship certificates at a recent ceremony at Douglas College. The crowded College board- room looked like a maternity ward .when fourteen as fifteen of the infants and their proud parents, siblings, and grandparents gathered there, along with officials from Douglas College. Although none of the young recipients wished to comment, their parents were thrilled about the significance of the scholarships. please see page 2
