Information and reservations; 604-527-5488 March 11 to 19 Theatre and Stagecraft Departments present Sympathetic Magic, by Lanford Wilson. Information and reservations; Identity issues exposed in experimental Oedipus the King What if someone entered the room right now and told you that you're not who you thought you were? It’s a modern-day nightmare in an era of identity theft. But it’s also at the heart of Oedipus the King, the great Greek tragedy written by Sophocles over 2,500 years ago. The Douglas College Theatre and Stagecraft Departments present Director Steven Drover’s experimental vision of this timeless story at the Studio Theatre March 4-12. Based on the theme of shifting identities, the production pushes the boundaries of group acting. “Unlike a conventional play where one actor plays Oedipus throughout, here the entire cast is responsible for all the character decisions made in the play,” says Drover. “It’s ensemble casting and it helps emphasize the idea that we're all Oedipus, we all make mistakes.” Six different actors play Oedipus, using a tragic mask to assume the character of the king of Thebes whose quest Summertime and for the truth about his past brings about his downfall. Drover’s approach shows the universality of this ancient tale and the relevance of Oedipus’ tragedy to individuals today. “T wanted to try this idea: what if we ask ourselves, ‘What if what happens to Oedipus happened to me?’ and treat Oedipus like an Everyman, then we are more likely to have access to this terrible tragedy,” says Drover. The production presents a challenge to the actors, but the enduring myth of Oedipus supports them. “It’s very powerful to stand on the stage and speak lines that have been spoken for thousands of years and to stand on the shoulders of giants,” says Drover.
