Vicki Condon of the Registrar's Office reports an enthusiastic response so far. “Students feel encouraged by this new approach, which gives them the facts about admission along with more personalized information from instructors.” Bravo to all participants in the new initiative. Payroll payday Payroll clerk Betty Clarke was pleasantly surprised to find herself the winner of last month's 60/40 payroll lottery. Betty receives $828 while student aid increases by $552. City of Surprises Congratulations to Renata Cacik and Val Schaefer of the Centre for Environmental Studies and Urban Ecology, co- authors of the recently published City of Surprises: Discovering Urban Wildlife Habitats. Funding for research and writing was provided through BC21, the BC E-Team and BC Hydro. Kudos also go to Print Futures student James Chliboyko for layout and to the Friends of the Environment Foundation for enabling donations of the book to Lower Mainland school libraries. A round of applause The Ministry of Education, Skills and Training has recognized General Nursing instructor Pam Burry for her contributions to the Degree Program Review Committee, whose members face the challenge of reviewing new post-secondary program proposals. The Canadian Association of College and University Services sends thanks to Student Development Dean Ted James for his contributions to that organization's executive. Ted James, in turn, sends thanks on behalf of Student Services to everyone responsible for the “synergy and coorperation” which made the department's recent move such a success. Royals win big For the second straight year, the Douglas College Royals have won the BC College Athletic Association aggregate trophy. Congrats to men's volleyball coach Brian Newman, who took his team to the nationals for a third straight year; women's volleyball coach Susan Sharp, named the BCCAA’s top coach in her first year on the job; badminton player/coach Chantal Jobin, who led her team to win the provincial title and sixth national title of the decade; and wrestling coach Dave McKay, who helped Douglas College athletes clinch the male and female titles at this year's Canadian Junior Championships. Last but not least, coach Gert Van Niekerk led the College golf team to take first place at both the provincials and the Western Canadian Championships. Students honored with places on all-Canadian teams are Ken Kleindienst, Ken Kilpatrick and Becki Kosinski for volleyball, Raymond Tsoi and Jennifer Wong for badminton, and Stacy Reykdal for basketball. Wrestler Lyndsay Belisle won a gold medal for Canada at the Pan American Championships held March 27.
