Why should it matter?” Gale will discuss how faculty at post-secondary institutions from around the world use scholarly research into teaching and learning as a route towards developing themselves, their students and their institutions. Gale explores the heart of scholarship of teaching and learning by asking “How do you know what works to improve students’ learning? Do students gain a deeper insight when they role-play a character? Is learning strengthened through class presentations?” The event, sponsored by the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Project Steering Committee, takes place Tuesday, February 13, 11:30am-3pm in the New Westminster Campus Boardroom. Lunch is provided for those who register by February 6. RSVP to Dr. Richard Gale, Director of the Carnegie Academy Institutional Leadership Program douglasdevelopment@douglas.bc.ca if you plan to attend. To view the online calendar go to www. douglas. be.ca/events/events-calendar Climbing for a cancer cure In the classroom, Chemistry instructor Randy Alex teaches his students about the chemistry of cancer and recent advances in treatment. Now, he will be climbing Mount Kilimanjaro in September to raise funds to support cancer research. Alex will travel to Tanzania to challenge the highest mountain in Africa to raise funds for the Canadian Cancer Society. The climb is partly to honour the relatives and close friends that his family has lost to the disease but also to celebrate those who have survived cancer due to recent advances in treatment. “A local boy in our Port Coquitlam Cub Scout pack has just successfully finished treatment for a childhood cancer — I’ll be carrying a personal item of his to the top to celebrate his success,” says Alex. “Our two sons still miss their Grandma, whom we lost to cancer several years ago. I'll be climbing for her as well.” Alex will cover all of his expenses so all funds raised can go to the Canadian Cancer Society. He'll be visiting colleagues and friends at Douglas College to ask for their support for cancer research.
