INSIDE DOUGLAS COLLEGE / March 3, 1992 The Inside Zone by Carillon The Winter Olympics are over, and so, apparently, is winter in general. It’s spring, the time when thoughts of the young at heart turn to love (and baseball). Here are some fair weather tales that have sprung to our attention recently. Who says all the fun was in Albertville? Just because the Olympics are over doesn’t mean that the spirit of competition is gone. For those of you keeping score, there are four new babies and three preg- nancies in the Library, which ties them for the lead with the Depart- ment of Child, Family and Community Studies in the Baby Olympics at seven. Leading the Library charge are Interlibrary Loans/Deliquencies Assistant Lisa Desai, expecting her first child this July, and Librarian Sandra Hochstein, expecting her first in May. Yeah team! And before we book out of the Library, congratula- tions to Collection Control Assistant Laurel Klassen on her new house and on her upcoming wedding this July. It couldn’t have happened to a nicer person... English and Communications Departmental Assistant Barb Sek- Farcus « Farcus Cartoons Inc. 1990 Okay, that’s good. Now smile... hon, the latest winner of the Foundation’s 60/40 draw, is $145.60 richer. Barb plans to blow her winnings buying big presents for herself. Way to go, Barb. I need a vacation... Mexico seems to be the vaca- tion spot of choice for local mental health experts. Psychiatric Nursing Instructor John Crawford has just come back from Puerto Vallarta, and heading down to take his place is colleague Carey Boreham. Psychiatric Nursing In- structor Anna Helewka is opting for a Caribbean cruise starting off in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Also, we happen to know that Douglas Col- lege Board Chairman Myrna Popove is island-hopping in the Caribbean. Wrestling coach Dave McKay and D.C. wrestler Walter McLean will soon be spending two weeks in pre-Olympic matches in Cuba and Mexico with the Canadian Wrestling Team. McLean is hoping to qualify for the Barcelona Olym- pics this summer. Also heading down to Mexico, although as far as we know not for wrestling, is the PIO’s Graphic Designer Marilyn Attwood. Moving in a dif- ferent direction is Women’s Centre Coordinator Liz Wilson, who’s spending three weeks in Greece soaking up the culture and sun. And just back from Hawaii is the Library’s Circulation Super- visor Corrie Epp. That boy can sing... John Trottier, 22, past D.C. theatre student and present univer- sity transfer student, has been cast in the Fraser Valley Gilbert & Sulllivan Society production of Ruddigore, the Witch’s Curse, a light-hearted family operetta, in May at the Surrey Arts Centre. Trottier has just finished playing the lead in a production of Sing A Song of Sixpence there. His On-Site Engineer Wayne Lynch, the friendly guy who has been looking after heating, ventilating and air-conditioning on campus for the past seven years, has been named 1991 Employee of the Year by his employer, Landis & Gyr Powers, Ltd. Douglas College credits include Guys and Dolls (1990), Inherit the Wind (1989), and Kiss Me Kate (1988). Busy or what... Learning Resources Director Virginia Chisholm advises us that Monday, Feb. 24, was the Library’s busiest day ever, with 1,343 items circulated. She says that five years ago, 400 items would have been a big day. The ability to handle the increased cir- culation is due to automation and a great staff. See you on St. Patrick’s Day! a
