INSIDE DOUGLAS COLLEGE / MARCH 6, 1990 WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL Women’s Volleyball played two matches at VCC this weekend, losing to arch rivals VCC and defeating Cariboo College. Sue Sharp and Tanya Hall continued to turn in outstanding performances. The Royals finished the season 8-2 for 2nd place behind VCC. Championships will be at Trinity Western March 10. MEN’S VOLLEYBALL The Men’s Volleyball team dominated both CBC and Cariboo College at home over the weekend. With all-star performances from both Kal Heywood and Dan Athletic Update Kamke, the team defeated CBC in the first game 15-4, 15-11, and 15- 10. In the second game against Cariboo College, they defeated them 15-3, 15-9, 15-12 with Kal Heywood picking up his second all- star and Steven Levesque receiving the other. The Royals finished the season in 3rd spot. Championships will be held in Castlegar March 10. WOMEN’S BASKETBALL Douglas College’s Women’s Basketball team finished out its season with two losses this weekend. On Friday, February 23 in Kam- loops, the Royals gave up eight un- answered points to Cariboo before settling down and eventually losing by 10. Leading scorer for Douglas was Lorraine Denis with 18, fol- lowed by Crystal Caldwell with 16 and Trudy deBoer with 11. On Saturday night, the Royals needed to defeat Capilano in order to stay alive for a playoff hope. Royals came out strong and built a 12 point lead by half-time. Capilano was determined to catch up in the 2nd half and pressed hard to pull ahead and finally win the high scor- ing contest 81-77. Leading Douglas with 28 was Crystal Caldwell fol- lowed by Lorraine Denis and Jana Gibson with 12 each. Most of this year’s losses have been by only a basket or two. Next year, with a more experienced group of athletes, the Royals should be able to turn it around and get on track again. MEN’S BASKETBALL On Friday, February 23 at Cariboo College, the Douglas Col- lege Royals Men’s Basketball team won 93-75. Half-time score was 43- 41 for the Royals. Taras Maslechko and Max Von Trebra both had 18 points with 8 rebounds coming from Von Trebra. Dave Gill also netted 15 points and 5 assists. Saturday, the Royals defeated the Capilano Blues 90-68, after a close half-time score of 48-40 for the Royals. Dave Gill scored 17 points, Taras Maslechko scored 16, and Ted Vanderwal with 11 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists. The men finished the season in 4th place with the first playoff game against 1st place Trinity Western this weekend. @
