Technology defied Other Press staff con- tinue to pub- lish and d*** the Macs Annette Martin Observant and avid readers of the Other Press will have noticed a subtle change in the newspaper's format this semester. This is due to an ongoing problem with software in the Mac comput- ers that has the truculent little machines not speaking to the regular OP printer. A translation problem has been detected, or what Joyce Robinson, Production Resource person, calls, “connectivity problems.” The newspaper is usually laid up in Quark XPress but with the Macs unable to print, the paper is currently being produced on a small PC using PageMaker 6:5; Hamish Knox, acting has to be printed in “tiles” [over several sheets of paper] because the only printer that’s not in a conflict can’t handle the 11 x 17 paper we have to use.” Does this also explain why the photographic images are so dark? “Yeah,” says Knox, “For PageMaker we have to save the pictures as JPEG files instead of TIFFs and that . affects the quality of the photos. Any darkness in a photo is not corrected by PageMaker 6.5 as it is in Quark.” The problem in the Mac software is also affecting the word processing program, and writers and coordinators have to fight for time on the only functioning PC to input their stories. Says Robinson, with a touch of desperation in her voice, “The problems will eventually be fixed, but in the meantime we would encourage people with knowledge of Macs, Quark or printer driv- ers—especially QMS—to come down here and help us out.” So if you have any expertise with touchy Macs and their software, drop by room 1020—you'll be wel- Truculent little Macs. = = 1 ee, Sal woes . is .
