ASE kay. Here’s the deal. Lilith was the mythological first wife of Adam. Yeah, the Adam. Anyway, like most men since, Adam apparently wasn’t too big on sensitivity towards his partner. He basically commanded Lilith to lie beneath him whilst they were in flagrante dilecto. (You can see it coming, can’t you?) To which she calmly responded, “Shyeah, right.” Lilith did the unthinkable. She refused, falling on the oft-tried, and might I add completely correct, jusitification that she and Adam were equals. Adam would have none of this, and, with Neanderthal club solidly in tow, insisted his way or no way. completely reviled by this bonehead, opa&e@siwash.bc.ca Lilith hit the road. Even when God sent three angels to her, cooing the convincing “oh, c’mon, already, the Big Guy says you gotta” arugument, Lil stood her ground, and let that bitch Eve steal all the “glory.” And so, a bazillion years and a few platinum albums later, Sarah McLachlan put together Lilith Fair. Like most things touched by McLachlan, this idea is pure gold. In what a friend of mine playfully dubbed an “estrofest,” several of the best and brightest female performers of our time jumped on stage — not for a man-bash— for a celebration of Woman. A celebration of Equality. Of Love. Of Life itself. Well. Camille and Saffron Henderson, Holly McNarland, Michelle McAdorey (late of Crash Vegas), Paula Cole, Lisa Loeb, Emmylou Harris, Sarah McLachlan. On Septem- ber 14, (Okay, so the review’s late. When was the last time you weren’t busy as hell?) these women enter- tained a twenty-something audience at Nat Bailey Stadium, all of whom couldn’t care less that the sky looked to break open at any moment. Only about 20 minutes of precip during the host chanteuse’s closing set wet the crowd, but no amount of rain could have dampened the spirit here. Musical highlights included MeNarland’s opening mini-set and Sarah’s immaculate closing perform- ance; the former’s Mr. 5 Minutes is a You've come a long way. Maybe even further than you think. The grand prize winner this day, though, was Cole. Many in the crowd hadn’t been exposed to the honesty and raw emotion of her music. With a piano, her voice, and a percussionist, Cole took only two or three songs to instill an audience-wide omigod, | need to buy this chicks album trance. The only performer out of place here was Harris. She’s definitely a competent performer, and a powerful female in the industry. I’m sure that ot all, of the young women : on stage this day at least partially had _ Hanis to thank for either breaking or personal inspiration. ill with these distinctive, ts, whose open-hearted music evoked such intimate and sometimes explosive feelings, Harris just couldn’t keep up. Near the end of her set, you could feel the crowd sag, just a little, in wait for a return to the emotional highs they’d been privy to all day. It was a little like the child- hood wait between Christmas Eve dinner and the big day. It’s nice and all, to see your family together, but after a while you just longingly start eyeing your presents. Once Sarah wrapped up the show with a third encore, and the armies of happy GoreTex-clad fans streamed home, we were warmed with the thought that McLachlan plans on bringing Lilith back next summer, for the first offical Lilith Fair Tour. Most of this year’s performers will likely repeat, and names like Tori Amos and Joan Osborne are being tossed about. If you need more convincing, you’re more of a bonehead than Adam.
