Evaluation continued from page 1 Gerry Della Mattia, Dean of Human Resources and College Development, agrees that a faculty evaluation system can best be put into place with as many people involved as possible. Once in place, faculty can benefit from an effective method of evaluation. "We need to find ways to tell faculty they’re doing a good job, a system that will tell them, ‘You're doing a great job in these areas, but here’s a couple of things you could be doing better.” Douglas College Faculty Association Representative Cathie Cookson said the Faculty Association supports an evaluation system that would take into account all the learning components of the College. "We need to put together a constructive faculty appraisal based on the qualities of what makes a good teacher, or a good community programmer, good librarian, good counsellor. It’s not just teaching we’re talking about," said Cookson. "We need to work together to work out a constructive and objective system. Creating a system like that would allow us all to work together and develop an understanding of each other’s issues." The notion that faculty evaluation results will be used to make personnel decisions was down played by Dr. Arreola. He says there is a personnel ele- ment, but both the personnel and diagnostic elements can be served by a single evaluation system. "They aren’t in conflict. Personnel decisions might be affected by aggregate information, but my impression here at Douglas is that the administration really cares about supporting the faculty in their self- improvement efforts." =
