DOUGLAS COLLEGE douglas college | ARCHIVES Inter Office Memo Date: January 16, 1986. To: DOUGLAS COLLEGE BOARD From: W.L. DAY Re: PRESIDENT'S REPORT A. External Matters - Municipal On the evening of January 15, the Royal City '86 Committee hosted a special community consultation held in the Douglas College Theatre on the subject of Expo '86 and its implications for New Westminster. Mr. Trerise, and other members of the Board attended. Documentation has been received from New Westminster City staff, in response to our proposals regarding Simcoe Park. This is in the hands of the Finance, Facilities & Personnel Committee of Douglas College, and will be reviewed later in the Board Meeting. On December 23, Mr. P. Sanderson, Industrial Development Officer for Burnaby Municipality, paid a visit to the College, in order to compare notes on economic development plans in Burnaby, and the possible relationship of Douglas College to activities going on in that municipality. He expressed considerable interest in the Centre for Enterprise Development, and requested that he be kept updated as that organization develops. B. External Matters - Education The Canadian Job Strategy, and its implications for changed relationships between CEIC and British Columbia colleges, has consumed a considerable amount of time and attention within the Ministry of Education and in the field. I have spent considerable time, as Chairman of the Council of B.C. College & Institute Principals, in meetings with the Deputy Minister, the Assistant Deputy Minister Post-Secondary, and other staff. Additional meetings will be occurring later this month. At this time, the direct effects upon Douglas College are not major, because of the limited number of "hard" vocational programs offered by this institution, and the fact that historically, we have not been very dependent upon CEIC contracts. The effects on the system, however, will be pervasive, and are bound to affect the College as the net amounts of money spent directly within the College system by the federal government decrease over the next two years.
