Groupwise users will now see confirmations for library instructional sessions appearing as appointments represented as a book/clock icon at the bottom of the message. Confirmations for classes to be held at the New Westminster Campus read “Library Newwest ELF” and those for Coquitlam say “Library DavidLam ELE” Jannine Grant, Instructional Services Assistant, is the human being who schedules library instruction at both campuses. Messages include details about your class, including the date and time it is scheduled, the librarian who will be teaching, and the resources/InfoSkills labs that will be used in the session. Coaching Kudos Two College coaches are in the limelight this month. Dave McKay, wrestling coach in the Centre for Sports Recreation and Wellness, has been nominated for Coach of the Year by Sport BC. Chris Johnson, Sports Institute Programmer, is the recipient of this year’s Sport BC President's Award for demonstrating outstanding dedication and commitment to his sport. Security Guard program nets award On December 6 the Security Guard Training Program at Centre 2000 was awarded the Program of the Year award by NETWERCC (Networking, Education and Training for Workers in Employment, Rehabilitation and Career Counselling.) The recipients of the award at Centre 2000 were Cathy Griffin, Program Manager; Jim Foston, Security Guard Trainer; and Norma Taite, Co-ordinator. The security guard program, which provides security guard training for women and men in receipt of income assistance benefits, is located in Surrey and is sponsored by the Ministry of Social Development and Economic Security. It has been operating for three years and has an 80% employment rate for its graduates. Chris also received another accolade on January 28 at the annual Baseball Coaches of BC Conference where he was made an Honorary Lifetime Member of the Board of Directors of the Baseball Coaches of British Columbia (BCBC). The award was given “...for many years of service and dedication to BCBC and the baseball youth and coaches in British Columbia.” Briefly Meg's a winner! December's 60/40 winner is Meg Stainsby. Meg takes home $810 while student aid increases by $540! Happy 104th! Maureen Rutter from the Registrar’s Office at the David Lam Campus went to Montreal on December 3, 2000 to celebrate her Father's 104th birthday. Born in 1896 in the Bay of Islands, Newfoundland, John Furlong celebrated this special day with Maureen, her three sisters and one brother. Learn to avoid workplace conflict Advanced Training in Conflict Resolution (Communications 316) will be offered in intersession (May and June; Tuesdays and Thursdays, 5-8 pm). Participants will learn how to negotiate conflict, discover their own trigger points, develop conflict resolution skills and examine their conflict resolution ability both before and after the course. The course is an academic one focusing on career-specific, professional and technical Health Care language for students with intermediate English, not for foreign-trained health professionals who need an intermediate command of English as we incorrectly reported.
