Plans are also in the works fora new summer music camp in 2004. The Community Music School offers high-quality instruction, with many of the Music Department's own faculty giving private lessons. Courses at the New Westminster Campus include audio engineering classes, Suzuki classes (in violin, viola, and cello), and group voice classes. And then there is the very successful Douglas College Choral Society which, under the direction of Alison Nixon, performs regularly throughout the Lower Mainland. Classes begin in September. Partial proceeds will go toward financial aid for students in the College’s Hotel and Restaurant Management, Athletics and Dispensing Optician programs and the CKNW Orphans Fund. Last year’s festival sold out, raising over $20,000 for student aid and drawing 400 guests. The event takes place at Excellence at Douglas College Congratulations to all of the winners of the Educational Excellence Awards for their dedication and inspiring performances. “They met —and exceeded — the criteria,” says Fran Johnson, who served as Chair of the Educational Excellence Committee. Jim Sator, the former Dean of the Faculty of Commerce and Business Administration, who recently retired, was honored for Administrative Excellence. Trevor Tombe, a Commerce and Business Administration student who served on the College Board, Education Council, the Student Success Task Force and the student government, won for Student Excellence. For Faculty, Pat Brown of Early Childhood Education, Gerard Edwards of Marketing and Jay McGilvery of Psychology were recognized for their contribution to the College. Wendy Waidson, of Douglas Development, and Brenda Jack, of The Training Group, won for Staff Excellence.
