School Sports. On October 22 the executive director of B.C. School Sports Gay Gale, B.C.S.S. Board member Maryanne van Dyke, and Heather Cranston, President of the Bur- naby-New Westminster Secondary Schools Athletic As- sociation, presented Douglas College Foundation Chairman Peter Webster with the wheeler at a small ceremony in the Douglas College weight room. The Wheeler is a platform with rollers which allows wheelchair users to train indoors. Much like the principle behind a stationary bike, the wheelchair is held sta- tionary when the wheels are turned. Different degrees of ten- sion may be chosen by the athlete in order to replicate uphill or flat- land wheeling. The original design for the wheeler was developed in the early 1980's by Rick Hansen and Tim Frick of the Douglas College Physical Education Department. The wheeler was then redesigned by an engineer at B.C. Tel. B.C. School Sports, using funds raised through the Milk Run Fund, has donated 16 wheelers to school districts across the province for use by disabled stu- dents. At the request of Tim Frick, the 17 Wheeler was donated to the Douglas College Foundation. Two more Wheelers will be donated to school districts by the end of this year.
